Travelling around using the Subway system, I know it's not easy in L.A. but are there any particular places to avoid as a tourist?
I am staying near the Highland n Hollywood area.

Red Line is pretty safe all the way up and down. You may want to think twice before getting on or off at Alvarado/MacArthur Park station because the area is a bit seedy (drug dealers, drug addicts, generally rundown).
If you are going to connect at the 7th Street Metro station to the Blue Line for a trip into Long Beach (excellent destination--the train will bring you right downtown near the newly constructed wharf area, the Long beach Aquarium and loads of other attractions), please just get on the train in downtown Los Angeles and ride directly to Long Beach without getting off at any other stations prior to 1st Street end-of-line stop in downtown Long Beach. Also avoid eye contact and/or conversation with rowdy youths who may board the Blue Line train at any stop. They will usually ride the train and get off after a few stations.
The subway and above-ground trains are good value for the money: $3.00 for an all-day pass, which also entitles you to ride any Metro bus until 3:00a.m. the following day.
Enjoy your stay in my fabulous city!

It's just not feasible to travel on public transit in L.A.

Anywhere worth going to requires a car or other private transportation (including Anaheim, Laguna Beach, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Malibu, etc. etc. etc.)

New York has a subway. Los Angeles has a little tourist tram connecting a lesser theme park (Universal Studios...IMHO Disney's better) with a tourist trap (Hollywood Blvd) that thinks it's a subway. The "Little Red Line That Couldn't".

If you're strictly asking about the Redline, which is the only subway proper in Los Angeles, then I don't think you have a lot to be concerned about. Up and down the line, you're pretty safe.

If you're extended your trips to the connected light rail system (Blue Line, Green Line and Gold Line), then I'd suggest avoiding certain portions of the Blue Line if you're by yourself at night. During the day, I wouldn't be too concerned, but know where you're going.

As long as you are within 2 blocks from the Metro station, you will be safe. Just watch out for the drunks in party town Hollywood/Vine.

Hollywood is a dump. Homeless teens and pan handlers all over the place.

I was under the impression that NYC had a subway, not LA.
