Looks can be deceiving. Many people become prisoners of their own homes after dark. On the other hand, the place you live is often what you make of it. If you want to try the area out, why not rent before you decide to buy? Good luck with your decision.

That's where I'm from. There are people that work, own their own homes, bought cars, and put their children through the best Universities, and then there some that could not make it because no home training. One parent home, some no parents, some parents are locked up, on drugs, not working, and don't care. There are a few cowards that must hang out with bad influences and rather, cheat, steal to get what they want. This problem is not in just in Compton, it's in every neightborhood, some just hide their dirt. Tookie did not start the Crips, It was Raymond Washington, he even has a website, and Slyvester "Puttin" founded the Piru's.
I lived on Piru Street from the 70's to the 80's.

Parts of Compton are bad but there are also good parts. Yes there are gangs and shootings but there is also poverty. I think Compton has a bad rep because of all the minorities living in the city and the poverty too.
No I am not talking smack, I am mexican, but it is a city full of minorities. And many people see cities like this as ghetto because white people are rarely seen.
There is an area where the houses are nice, but a bigger area where people are struggling to live.

When I first moved to LA, someone took me to Comptom. Being from Philadelphia, I thought it was beautiful...nice houses with yards and trees, and cars along the street.

Later, I found out that a good neighborhood has no parking on the street and no bars on the windows.

I've never been to Compton after hours.

Oey vey, Compton is not all about big houses or nice cars. It looks like a regular neighborhood. Yes, like many cities Compton has drugs, etc. You have to remember it is all about the media, they make it look really bad. There are bad people out there, but there are alot of people who are just like you who want to live their lives and not want to be bothered. It just takes a few idiots to screw it all up and the media to play on it, with a bit of successfully people who used to live there to popularize it, which they themselves leave and never return. LoL that says alot!

It's bad but not terrible. Check out Carlos Mencia's stand up comedy about white people and Compton. Freakin' hilarious.

South Central, is notorious for being the crime capital of Los Angeles and generally one of the highest violent crime rates in California.
The infamous "Bloods" and "Crips" gangs (which Stanley Tookie Williams founded, and was recently executed) originated in this area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crips (ok so Tookie "co-founded" the Crips along with Raymond Washington)..

So yes, Compton may look like a decent neighborhood on the surface but it really is that bad...
