My husband and I would really like to relocate to North Carolina and buy a house in the mountains. I would really, really appreciate some suggestions as far as areas/towns/cities that would best fit our two main needs:

First, my husband works for a major retail chain and must transfer to one of the following locations: Hickory, Winston-Salem, Huntersville, Pineville, Greensboro, Charlotte, Asheville, High Point, Johnson City (TN), or Bristol (VA).

Second, we really want to live IN the mountains - not just see them in the distance on a clear day. In an ideal, perfect world, we'd love to find a place on the side of a mountain with a deck and a great view.

So...I know this is a tall order, but I'm trying to figure out where we can start looking where he won't have a horrible commute, but we could still live on a mountain. I've looked at tons of maps, but I'd really like a human's advice. Any suggestions??

I'm moving from IL. to Goldsboro, N.C. in about nine months, no family there, but I want to do is voulunteer work at a military base in the area. This is my time to enjoy life and to give gack to those who have given theirs for us.My daughter was in the Army, but all military bases need help and their familys also. Need to make some connections here please!!!
So any one want to take me up on this and tell me what am I in store for here. I've been to Fayetteville and Jacksonville about five time each. Heaven sent if I do say so.
I'm sorry to say the only complant I do have is your speed limt, my one and only speeding ticket I got in Jacksonville, yes we do drive like there's no tomorrow up here. That's the way we are, I hope to curb that by moving!! Till then I'll leave the governor in tact in the car, ha !! Thanks for your stories ahead of time.

If I was to earn either £35,000 in London or $70,000 in New York, which would allow me a better quality of life. So what are the differences in the take home pay after tax, what would the comparison of rent be, eating out, etc. Please base answers on a lively, 27 year old wanting to live in a safe area, in a nice apartment ( flatshare) not neccesarily in Manhattan.

I'm going to New Orleans to volunteer and help out for a week in January, but I also want to do tourist stuff since I'm out there paying for my flight. Is there fun stuff to do, even after Katrina hit? If so, what and how much? Where should I visit?? Thanks.

P.S. What about the crime rate? Is it up?

we have 3 kids under 6, and 1 on the way. Tickets are like $23 adult, $16 kids (live in chicago). Membership is $95 for a year. Have grandma visiting, hubby says to go without kids...cos too expensive, but I think we should buy membership...or should we just all go once and thats it? We don't go out THAT often but membership seems to be price of just 2 visits....Also, which do we choose - Shedd Aquarium, Childrens museum, or what? Some memberships inc reciprocity (can go to similar establishments in other states for free or less).

Chicago news has the habit of reporting everything that happens south of the Loop as occurring on "Chicago's South Side," no matter if it's east or west. It generally makes no difference.

We also would like to see mountains and snow and stay in a cabin. If possible we would also like to go on a horse trail ride. One where you don't bring your own horse. Thank you for your sugguestions.
