My husband and I would really like to relocate to North Carolina and buy a house in the mountains. I would really, really appreciate some suggestions as far as areas/towns/cities that would best fit our two main needs:
First, my husband works for a major retail chain and must transfer to one of the following locations: Hickory, Winston-Salem, Huntersville, Pineville, Greensboro, Charlotte, Asheville, High Point, Johnson City (TN), or Bristol (VA).
Second, we really want to live IN the mountains - not just see them in the distance on a clear day. In an ideal, perfect world, we'd love to find a place on the side of a mountain with a deck and a great view.
So...I know this is a tall order, but I'm trying to figure out where we can start looking where he won't have a horrible commute, but we could still live on a mountain. I've looked at tons of maps, but I'd really like a human's advice. Any suggestions??

Asheville seems to be your obvious choice! Both of my parents were from the Buncombe County and Madison County areas there. It is gorgeous in the Fall.
So much to do. I love it!!! Also, you may wish to visit Mars Hill. And Mars Hill College just north of Asheville.
My Great, Great Grandfather was the original founder of the college, and my late Uncle Otis has a permanent showcase exhibit there that profiles and benchmarks his life and times as an obstetrician who with such a legacy delivered over 8000 babies. That's over half the county! Times sure have changed a lot over the years!

Like everyone here says, Asheville is a beautiful place to live and visit. It is literally in the mountains, so you could live and work there. The housing market is a bit expensive there, but if you can afford it go for Asheville. The town itself is quite lovely and has an artistic, progressive flair.
There are other nice places to live near his transfer locations. Hickory is in the mountains. It's not as artsy or charming as Asheville, but it's definitely a beautiful area. Also, Winston Salem is in the foothills. There are nearby mountains (Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock), and Winston Salem is a nice city with excellent shopping opportunities.
Personally, I would avoid Charlotte, Greensboro, and High Point. Good luck with your decision! I hope you find your dream home with a big deck overlooking the Blue Ridge skyline.

Johnson City/Bristol aren't bad, but not in the mountains.
Like others have said, Asheville is in the mountains. You should be able to find a place out of the city but still close.

I have lived in Asheville for over two years. It is a very nice place to raise a family however, the homes are rather pricey. You may want to look outside of Asheville in places such as Arden or Fletcher where the real estate is a little less expensive and you could still have your view.

Well, If you really want, I would go with Asheville but it is a relatively "hippie" town. Huntersville NC is a beautiful city with lots to do and its twenty minutes away from Charlotte, concord mills and two hours away from the mountains. I say you should visit a couple places before settling that way you get what you want where you want it!

You may want to consider checking out the Boone/ Blowing Rock/Banner Elk area for real estate. They're beautiful places to live and within reasonable commuting distance to Hickory. Asheville is one of my all time favorite places to see and visit but it's also pretty pricey. However, if you prefer living closer to Asheville check out Hendersonville, Arden and Black Mountain for real estate. Hope this helps.

Some of my cousins left New York, and now live in Hendersonville NC. They took a Real estate class before deciding on where to relocate. As it turns out Hendersonville is south of Asheville, It has one of the lowest crime rates ratings, lowest unemployment rate, and tax rate is very low. The homes are beautiful, and you get a lot more for your money, with all the extras. Fireplace, spacious rooms with ornate window designs etc. We went for a visit, the Mountains are so majestic, it's breathtaking. Oprah W., stays there once in awhile. She was seen jogging by the locals. But they are hush-hush about it, for privacy reasons.
Defiantly worth checking out.
Best of luck, & I hope this helps you out.

My choice using your specs would be Greensboro. Ashville is good ...closer to mountains I think. Hendersonville & Brevard ar premium & close to Ashville. Arty & cultural communities, diverse...us Yankees are spreading out down here. BTW Connestee Falls is a gated community on/near Cedar mountain....Transylvania & Hendersonville counties..Come for a visit...hang out in H'ville or Brevard coffee shop etc...Brevard is a more sophisticated version of Myberry. Hendersonville is Mayberry on steroids.
