I'm thinking about using my Yahoo! webspace to build up a site that might provide travellers with some useful information about Germany, but I don't know what your more specific questions might be, except for the speed limits on the Autobahn. (A: There are some, and where there are none, mind that the BMW in your rear view mirror might be faster than your rented Mercedes A-class, and the left lane is for passing ONLY; never pass on the right lane, even when there is space.)

Any other things you'd like to know? If I don't know them, I'll do some research.

My grandmother was born there in the early 1900's, and when I visited Germany about 20 years ago, I couldn't find in on a map, but it was probably a very small town. My friend thinks it was likely in northern Germany and its name was possibly changed at some point.

There is a group of German students that some school friends and I are hosting. We've all noticed that they kind of ignore and are mean to one of the other German students. We all think he is very nice and want to get him a gift when he leaves. What kind of gift would you suggest?

I live in Holland near the German border, and would like some suggestions for day or weekend trips in Germany -- historic towns & villages, nice scenery, etc. Any suggestions welcome!

I have my passport with valid UK visa (I am not British), but this passport had no more pages so I got new passport and have to transfer my visa into it, but home office told me to apply by post. I have no time to do it. I have my old passport with visa, but there is corner cut on it (makes it invalid) and I have my new passport with no visa. Can I travel like that to Poland? (and no, I am not Polish). Home office officer told me that I can, but maybe he just wanted to get rid of me as I kep asking why cant I get my visa transfered in person (not by post).

Please, Can anyone help me? Many thanks

Ok, so I'm obsessed with Germany, and I'll go anytime I can. I just so happens that I can this January, so I bought a ticket. But everyone is saying/worried that I'll be miserable and cold, and have a horrible time. What do you think? How bad is the winter in Germany?

Also, I don't plan on skiing. I just want to visit cities, go hiking, etc... I'm going to rent a very small car for a few days to tour parts of the country. Will I have trouble driving because of snow or not?

And, if possible, about how long would it take to walk if you kept at a steady pace, resting at night, stopping occasionally for rests, just a rough guesstimate.
Thanks!

I saw a sign in a beer hall in Nurnberg the other day, it was part English, part German. I understand the words, but am just trying to remember one word. The sign was as follows:

Its nice to be "Preiss",
Its higher to be "Bayer",
But ??? to be "Mittel Frank"

Obviously, each line rhymes. I think the word I have shown as ??? was something like Gotgeshank or Gotdanke. Something about being god's gift or thank god for being "Mittel Frank" (Franconian).

Thanks!

I am going to be living in heidelberg for 4 months to study there and i will have weekends to travel, as well as about 10 days when i first arrive. i would love to spend the weekends travelling around germany, especially the moselle river (vinyards), rhine river (castles). I would also like to travel to Amsterdam for a few days before classes start. I looked online and a Train will cost about $160, is there a cheaper way to get around? Maybe busses? Is there a web site anyone can reccomend?
