There are a lot. Especially Münster. Was elected 3 years ago to the most liveable city world-wide!
Its a really "green" city, with a lot of nice old buildings, a lake, a lot of bars and much more.

"Münster has been able to call itself the city with the highest quality of life in the world since October 2004. The metropolis in Westphalia is the first German city to have won the Gold LivCom Award in Niagara/Canada and came first in the category of cities with 200,000 to 750,000 inhabitants. Münster was thus able to beat cities such as Seattle/USA, Okayama/Japan, Changshu/China, Posen/Poland and Coventry/Great Britain in its premiere in this international cities’ competition.

More than 450 towns and cities from throughout the world had taken part in this competition in 2004, which is officially called the "International Awards for Liveable Communities". 53 were nominated by the event organisers – the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Federation of Park and Recreation Administration to take part in the final.

Above all the sustained planning and the interdepartmental work carried out convinced the international jury. "

Germany has many nice places.
I prefer that town of Fulda.

Look here: www.Fulda.de

Not far from Frankfurt by Train or car, old city with a town castle and a cathredal (Dom) the 2nd oldest church in Germany (Michaelskirche) and a beautiful "OldTown". Good restaurants to reasonable prices and a wonderful surrounding area. Have fun!

RE:
What do you think is the most beautiful city in Germany?

Tough one. Munich has Bavarian charm, is almost pristine with the mountainous backdrop. Hamburg is by contrast a nice northern city, along the water, its architecture a contrast to the more conservative south. But the winner still is...

Berlin!

Why? Anybody who has seen Berlin when it was merely West and East Berlin will recall that West Berlin even before the wall came down at a certain charm, despite its sequestered state in the middle of the former East Germany. Now that both Berlins have merged, you have a city in perfect harmony, where the old east meets the new west, where modernism meets tradition. For every new parliament building there is an old city opera house or a Gedaechtniskirche to remind people what made this city so special to begin with. There will be the glitter of the new Railway station as opposed to the old university and library buildings. There are the monuments of the Berlin Wall and the old Olympic Stadium on one side, the old statues of Marx and Engels on the other. Call it almost schizophrenic! Berlin is easily one of the greenest cities you will find anywhere. Lakes, parks... it's hard to know where they end at times. The new Berlin is not only unique to Germany but to all of Europe.

I agree with Bamberg, Heidelber & Hamburg. But nobody mentionend Freiburg!

So I'll give my vote to the beautiful town of Freiburg, Breisgau.

Can I pick three?

Heidelberg - gorgeous city with castle ruins on a hillside

Munich - classic Bavarian architecture and beautiful green spaces

Frankfurt - for the duality and contrast between ultra-modern Germany and the old world Germany of the past.

I have trouble narrowing it down to 1.

Bamberg and Heidelberg are 2 very nice cities. Bamberg is more quiant and has a smaller feel to it than Heidelberg. Rothenburg is absolutely cool and has a total medieval flair to it. Yes it's touristy but it's very pretty.

Berchtesgaden is in the Alps and has some stunning views and is a wonderful town to wander around in.

Those are my votes.

Cologne! My home town has The Dom, the Rhine River, the Roman battlements, great street artists, lots of old quirky buildings.
