Please clarify some of these costoms....is name day celabrated instead of birthdays? If a single woman dies before she is married is she buried in a wedding dress? Do you drive the body past the house that they lived in one last time? I understand there may be different customs based on different religions, thanks.

Visiting Greece (Cyprus 6 times) several times a year since over 14years, I have firm ideas based on personal experiences and literature on this issue. Whatever my personal conviction, every day now because of the eventual EEC membership of Turkey, I try to guide myself through this complicated matter. If there is a need to start a political forum on this issue, does it need to be brought on 'travel'.... 'Greece' ..?

I'm Greek and have been to Istanbul twice. Both times all people were nice, friendly and polite. In general I feel like having a lot more things in common with Turks, in terms of culture, way of living etc, than with the rest of Europe. So who on earth are those people who support a stupid rivalry and say we can't be friends???

I'm not anti-Greek at all, as a matter of fact I have some Greek friends and wish for peace in between Greece and Turkey. However, I don't know how the Greek public as a whole would feel if they saw a Turkish person walking around the place. I just wanna be safe!

1) How should I act and cover up the fact that I'm Turkish?

2) There's a stamp in my passport saying that I've been to North Cyprus before, and apparently Greece is allowed to block incoming visitors who have the stamp. What can I do?

On the occasion of a question formed as wht we,Greeks, should do in order to improve our tourism and some answers given on it I decided to open this topic.I read "You cater for everyone, please keep it like tht".I would say "Please keep being the same victims we are used to consider you as".They said"you steal foreigners with your high taxis in your dealing with them".We are a small country who is trying to develop mostly by tourism..That is why we the stupid ones are trying to learn foreign languages a point tht foreigners think as a must and they demand it from local people..We are paying our Euros to visit your country..We are paying hundreds of Euros hundreds of hours wasted in classes learning your languages every year...A fourth-month period in the British Council is payed with more than 900€..And wht is written on the receipt is tht we give the money for charities In England..Because yes,England need charities a lot.So who are the suckers?????????

I will be visiting Greece from the 25th December to the 1st of January. Apart from Athens, I'd like to cover a couple of the Greek islands and am considering Mykonos and Santorini for their beaches, night life and volcanic remains...

Is that a good choice? Any better suggestions? I'm more into the natural beauty and not really the museums, historical sites and architecture.

Also what do I do in Athens? Is there anything special for the new years eve celebrations?

Thanks..

Hi. I will be visitng Athens next week. Besides Athens city, are there any other sights nearby that are open in winter? Every guide book and most tours state the places of interests are open from --- to Oct or Nov. Do the nearby islands close for winter?

I will be studying in Europe for a few months next year and will be spending my last week abroad vacationing on a greek island with my mom. We are looking for relaxing beaches and a fun atmosphere with good food and views. The five islands above are places that seem like something we would like. which do you recommend and where should we stay on the island. Looking for a moderatately priced hotel with all the amenities and good location :)
