You can go to Delphi and Hosios Loukas (about 2 hours drive), or Nafplio and Epidaurus(also about 2 hours drive). Also you can go to Egina, it's an island one hour away, very picturesque and do visit the temple of Afaia there. Also Monemvasia is wonderful for a week-end trip (better accessible with a high speed boat). From the islands, Syros and Mykonos are quite close and not too deserted, you can combine them both, they are on the same ferry line.
My advice is to do at least 2 of the proposed excursions, if you have the time, you'll enjoy it and see another aspect of Greece other than Athens. Careful:if you decide to go to Delphi, don't miss the monastery of Hosios Loukas, it's close by, better take an organised tour to both or find a way to get there, taxi from Delphi or whatever.

Hello! The islands never close , but the truth is that the weather is not the best. Still u can visit Mykonos, it's a 2 or 3 hours ship trip and it's definetely 'the hot spot' , mostly during the summetime , but even Christmas u can find thing to do.
Best to enjoy the capital of Greece though, Athens , it will be the center of events!!
U also have beutiful mountain trips, Monemvasia, Arachova if u wanna visit. Leave the islands for spring or summer..
Enjoy yr stay **

Restrict yourself to Athens; there is so much to see.
For opening hours of the musea, see attachment. Probably applicable for all sites in and around Athens.
Islands are more pleasant in May, June & September; if you really like it hot & crowded, try July or August.
Myself I am visiting Athens 24/12 till 1/1/2007.
Enjoy your stay.
Have a look at my Athens albums in the joined link;

The main Museums are open most of the time and islands do not close, because they are inhabited by people who live there permanently. You can visit the islands of Aegina, Poros and Hydra by hydrofoil or you can have a tour to the Cape Sounion with its interesting archaeological site, Lavrion with the industrial park or you can rent a car and explore the surroundings, driving one to two hours.
Good luck!
