I will be visiting Greece from the 25th December to the 1st of January. Apart from Athens, I'd like to cover a couple of the Greek islands and am considering Mykonos and Santorini for their beaches, night life and volcanic remains...

Is that a good choice? Any better suggestions? I'm more into the natural beauty and not really the museums, historical sites and architecture.

Also what do I do in Athens? Is there anything special for the new years eve celebrations?

Thanks..

I am sure in Athens you will find lot's of things to do and go around, since it will be Christmas. About your choice for Mykonos and Santorini it's a great choise but at the wrong time of year. Definitely great beaches and volcanic remaining but not night life this time of the year. have a look at www.4travel.ws

how come u decided to visit Greek Islands in the winter??
i mean it's some much prettier from May to October, why now?
But still Athens IS Beautiful and u better stay in the capital for the celebrations. There will be a lot of festivities for X-mas and New Years and there is a great vibe!!
The islands won't have a lot of tourists, and generally u will get bored maybe.. it depends what kind of holidays u want to do.
if u like isolation , Greek islands good choice in the winter.
if not , stay in Athens or visit a Greek mountain 4 skiing and cocooning!

I have to go with what other people are saying here. Its winter over there in Greece and even though it doesnt get that cold over there, average highs are only in the 50's and it rains a lot. Not good beach weather.

If your not really into historical stuff then theres not much else to do cause the two biggies are gone.

In case you change your mind about the historical sites, the acropolis is a must and so is the Athens museum. They have amazing stuff that you won't be disappointed to see

I must tell you that December is winter in Greece. The islands are mostly a summer thing. I mean the beaches won't be suitable for swimming. Anyway, Mykonos and Santorini are quite touristic, so they may not be very deserted.

Mykonos is beautiful (see my album-pictures in the enclosed link) , but I doubt wether anything moves there in the month of December. Have not been in Santorini myself, but is for sure a futur destination for me. As one answer is telling you, Aegina is a close island easily accessable with Hydrofoil out of Pireaus, but I would recommand Hydra island offering much more. Even if you are not particularly interested in historical sites, I would recommand to drive to Corinth .. the natural beauty of the landscape seen from the hills is breathtaking. Also consider to drive down to Cape Sounion and on the way back, make a stop in the old port of Microlemano & eventually Zea near Pireaus (port of Athens). Enjoy your stay, merry Xmas and happy newyear.. Myself I leave Brussels for Athens on December 24th to fly back on January 1st.. and also looking forward to this Xmas holiday.

Not to familiar with Mykonos, but Santorini is stunning - black sand beaches, clifftop white villages - a must!! But not sure how much is open this time of year - a lot of Greek islands pretty much close down to tourists over the winter - better check it out!
Have fun

Hey! It is winter. Aegena is near Athens (short hydrofoil).
The National museum is a must. Buy the weekly English language Athens News from a kiosk. Some good galleries. The Parthenon is jaw dropping.
