Who are the victims?

On the occasion of a question formed as wht we,Greeks,should do in order to improve our tourism and some answers given on it I decided to open this topic.I read "You cater for everyone,please keep it like tht".I would say "Please keep being the same victims we are used to consider you as".They said"you steal foreigners with your high taxis in your dealing with them".We are a small country who is trying to develop mostly by tourism..That is why we the stupid ones are trying to learn foreign languages a point tht foreigners think as a must and they demand it from local people..We are paying our Euros to visit your country..We are paying hundreds of Euros hundreds of hours wasted in classes learning your languages every year...A fourth-month period in the British Council is payed with more than 900€..And wht is written on the receipt is tht we give the money for charities In England..Because yes,England need charities a lot.So who are the suckers?????????

I haven't also added that they come in our country and break down everything when being dead drunk..But I guess they don't pay for tht,do they?

Bellerophon:What kind of innuendo is this?Clever personal attack...It still remains an attack...I couldn't find any greek avatars.The avatars are american made.Even though there were greek avatars and I liked the cowboy hat I would still use it.Well I don't consider of myself a racist.Racism is hatred for other nations..I don't hate other nationalities..as long as they don't affect mine.I can call myself a nationalist though.You gave me another aspect with your answer which I hadn't thought of.Thnx.

We learn foreign languages and we have a respect for the other nations and that is what i like about us. I will keep learning and i will never feel a victim because knowledge is power and this is what we've learnt from our ancestors. Let the others think whatever they want but we will keep developing and growing by having open minds!

We are victims of ourselves and our ignorance, regardless who "we" are. It is true that Greece is one of the countries that have a very high percentage of habitats who speak at least one foreign language. Several decades ago French and German were the dominant foreign languages, while the last probably 30 years English prevails.

Why do we have such a thirst for foreign languages?
First of all there is the cultural inferiority complex that we have as a society due to our "dark ages" throughout the Turkish occupancy, which held us back from the technological, scientific and financial progress that Western European countries achieved at that time. Thus the West-european model was that of the "civilized" world and cultured people should have at least partial education in the language of the foreign scholars.

Apart from that, like it or not, English is the language used in many areas, especially science. Therefore if you want to keep up with the scientific developments and participate in them you need to speak English. Moreover, remember that higher education is a very important factor in the modern Greek society and lots of families send their children abroad for under or post graduate studies.

Greece is not a wealthy country. It's main source of income is tourism. Industries and product manufacturing businesses are becoming extinct instead of being developed. Thus our economy is rapidly becoming limited to provision of services and dependent on others.
If we want to build a strong economy we need to develop an independent economy. That in turn requires funds which we could acquire partially through tourism.
We don't "have to" learn foreign languages to please the tourists. We do it to beat the competition, even among ourselves, because we want this commercial transaction.

Providing proper services is essential. How would you feel if you were injured, you went to a hospital, they just threw you on a bed, measured your temperature, charged you for an operation and expected your gratitude for wasting the time of a nurse? Would you go back there? Would you blame somebody who would speak bad of that hospital?

If we provide bad services we discredit ourselves and stop the flow of finances. It's not about being a slave or servant to somebody else but being credible, reliable and winning over the market. That doesn't mean that we have to change our ways so that we "please" the tourists.

Finally you should know that knowledge is power. Increased ability to communicate with other groups gives you a great advantage over your competition regardless of what aspect of life we are talking about.

P.S. if you have such strong feelings about losing our cultural Greek identity, as stated in your questions, do you feel OK having the american cowboy hat of your avatar representing your personality?

I used to be a sufferer and selected to come to be a survior and feature been ever on account that! Whatever crappy revel in that has occurred in my existence I selected to show it right into a confident and get out of my rutt and transfer on. I have not forgotten b/c it is what is made who I am in these days. A Strong Woman that do not take crap off any person! I do not victimize others and I would not stand for it to occur to me. I suppose within the thought of what is going round, comes round. One day the ones that have a tendency to victimize others will come to be a sufferer themselves and nobody will care to aid them. They have it coming so far as I'm involved!

I believe that learning foreign languages is something good for someone.
I have been to a lot of european countries and people can not speak only but their mother tongue.(Spain,Portugal,Chech republic,Austria)In some other countries they knew english but they wanted to speak in their language only(Germany,France,Italy).
That is very bad for me,actually is sad.
I like very much the fact that we the greeks can speak with a lot of foreigner people.It is because we have a lot of tourism and because we like education,culture,communication.
I also believe that greek people are really smart and can easily learn a new language.Whoever I know can speak at least 2 foreign languages,
Don't forget that our ancient fathers loved Xenion Zeus,the god of foreigners and there were a lot of rules how to treat to a foreigner.
