I'm going to Kota Kinabalu in July for 2 weeks and I'd love to hear more about it than is in the guidebooks. Anything in particular that is not to be missed? Anything I should bring? How much money should I budget a day? Is it worth going out the the islands & diving? Guided tours VS doing it yourself for Mount Kinabalu?

My bf and I will be going back to Tokyo this October, and we plan to visit Puroland (Sanrio characters- mostly Hello Kitty). I'm a HUGE Hello Kitty fan and would like to know the best parts of the park, where to get the most unique, uncommon Hello Kitty items in the park? I saw that the cafeteria has kitty shaped plates--can I take that home? I am going to the Philippines in August and would like to bring things from the US to my relatives there. They are in a very rural area and I'm not sure what to bring.
