I've been there a few times. I'm originally from Dallas, Texas, USA...
I find Digos City, which is about 16 kilometers away from Davao City proper, a very enchanting little town. I like the attitude of it's residents, and the ease of finding what you need within its limits. I actually got married in the city. The people are friendly and warm in character. The city is a province or coutryside city which is clean for the most part, has easy access to the Davao Gulf and it's beaches. The largest company in Digos City, to my knowledge is a Japanese company, Nakayama, an architectural/construction firm. It also has several coconut processing plants, beautiful gardens, and the view is very pintoresque, as it sits at the base of Mount Apo.
As an American, I felt very safe there and enjoyed visiting. As with any city in the world, big or small as it may be, one must use discretion and observe obvious safety measures.
