I took a trip on the Silk road as well, starting near Uzbekistan to the Western end of the Great Wall. Only a few sections involved flying; most of it is done through a van (you get to see more this way too). I highly recommend doing this with a planned tour group, and not because I don't like backpacking or whatnot, but many of these cities are quite remote, and it would be difficult to plan where to stay in advance. Also, these cities do not get as high traffic volume as the major cities do, so the locals are not always used to seeing "western" things, including people. FYI - 3+ million people here (here as in this area, not in China) still live in caves w/o plumbing or running water so you get the idea that the "business" of travel does not operate the same way that we think.

Anyway, the only thing I recommend is driving into the Gobi dessert and riding on camelback. There is a real-life oasis city there, I think in english it's called "Crescent Lake"? Anyway, it's quite the experience; you can even climb up the sand dunes and "surf" down. Also, how many places in the world can you go to and see real life "wild" camels and real life oasis?

I am going in July. I booked most of our intra China flights through www.elong.com. They also offer hotel info.

We went previously on a small group tour. We were not thrilled with that method.

As far as tours, you can surf the web to book day tours or short tours. Taxis are inexpensive and good hotels can set up tours for you when you get there.

If you stay at the Beijing International they can help set up your tour. As well as the Silk Road tour, they can arrange trips to the Great Wall and they are near the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. It is a great hotel.
