I've recently purchased a pair of used rods, and they are missing several of the ceramics in the line guides. I've replaced rod tips before, but how do I replace a guide in the middle of the rod? Are the ceramic parts necessary?

So my husband & I were getting our ice shack ready for the lake last night...we got to talking about how many people we've met (from warmer places) who think that the whole concept is SO bazzar. For anyone who's never experienced this, what do you think of it? Would you ever like to try it?

Tell me about the "gimmicks", stuff you aquired but never use or any other piece collecting dust in your fishing arsenal.
This may be of use to some of those desiring to buy tackle for gifts this season.

Back in the early 90's "Pinnacle" reels & rods hit the scene hard. We sold quite a few of there Deadbolt series reels to customers. (Heck, I even bought one!)

What a piece of crap! At one time we had 22 Deadbolts returned and sitting behind the counter waiting to be sent back to the Pinnacle company, (we had only recieved 30!!)

I had to apologize to all my customers whom I had sold this "lemon" too!

And although we did continue to carry these reels I MADE SURE no one bought another one! (The Rep for Pinnacle would frequent the store and ask, "Hows the product selling?" I would retort," Great. Just Great!".) I must admit, their flipping rod 7'6" was nice.

How bought you guys? Bad experience?

I went crabbing on Saturday evening. I caught my limit, and because I was staying in a motel room, I put my crab into a ice chest with a bag of ice on them. I drove back home this morning, but didn't get home until around 8pm. I noticed a few of the crabs were dead. I cooked the dead ones separately from the live ones just in case, but are the dead ones safe to eat? They were kept on ice from the time I caught them until I put them into the pot of water. I don't want to waste the crabs, but I also don't want to get me or my family sick. :( Any idea if these are ok?

Is it catching something that's wild, the interaction, however cruel, with nature? Is it a reason for looking at a body of water and nature without getting bored or looking like your a nature-lover? What makes people doing something as inactive and boring as that?

What are the differences in these rods. I understand that the "inshore" version is for saltwater. But are there material differences?

Only reason I ask is that I need a two-piece for saltwater, and the "inshore" only comes in one. Thanks.

He's 5'6" but I dont know if height has anything to do with length of the pole. The two I am considering are a 6'6" Shimano AX Spinning combo (http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=336178&kwtid=238543) and a 5'6" South Bend Microlite R2F Panfish Spin Cast (cant find a link). I dont know what any of these words mean and I dont know what to look for! He will probably be fishing mostly in local freshwater lakes for small bass and trout. Please help!!!

What do you think of the issue, personally i hate it when i see anglers drinking whilst fishing, some people may disagree with me on this one but it really irritates me. I mean great have a drink in a bar but by the lake or on the boat is taking a bit far for my liking, what are your opinions on this subject, should it me banned?

If someone asks, "Whats a CHEAP fishing rod to buy?" Whats your responce?

In the early 90's I sold more Ugly Stiks to novice anglers than ANY other rod. In 3 years we got a handful of Uglys back broken, whereas, we had literally BOXES of Penn, Shimano, Browning, Quantum, Zebco, to send back to the manufac. In the 3 years I was a manager in the fishing/hunting Dept at Sports Authority I never ONCE had a customer complain that he got "cheated" when he purchased an Ugly. In fact, most people came back to purchase more tackle/items because we "set them up with a good combo".

Do I believe that Ugly Stiks are the best rod you can purchase? NO

Are they sensitive? NO (except for the "Lite" series)

Would I try to sell an Ugly Stik to a pro fisherman? NO

BUT, if someone asks for a cheap rod and they "might" go fishing 10 times a year what rod do YOU suggest they buy?

Remember-Something under $40-$50.

Zebco? Walmart/Kmart Special? Berkley Lightning Rod?

I'm looking for advice on equipment and accersories that would be good to have. I live in Los Angeles so I have freshwater, pier and deep sea fishing all available to me. Are the reel and rods that work for all conditions or would I need different equipment for different locations?

I lived in Sitka, Alaska, I was out fishing for Halibut, I got a tug on the line, I set the hook, it took off, I slowed it up and started to reel it in, I got it to the surface, it took off again, that happened a number of times, it took me about 45 min.s to bring it in from first tug to land it, it was too big to pull it on the boat, I had to slowly tow it to land, gaff it, and drag it to land. I didn't weight it, but it had to weight at least 150 lbs. Now that was fun!
