I went crabbing on Saturday evening. I caught my limit, and because I was staying in a motel room, I put my crab into a ice chest with a bag of ice on them. I drove back home this morning, but didn't get home until around 8pm. I noticed a few of the crabs were dead. I cooked the dead ones separately from the live ones just in case, but are the dead ones safe to eat? They were kept on ice from the time I caught them until I put them into the pot of water. I don't want to waste the crabs, but I also don't want to get me or my family sick. :( Any idea if these are ok?

Now I am sure some will disagree with me. But DO NOT EAT THEM. It’s just not worth the chance. Now when you catch a crab and then pop the shell off and break them in half and wash out the guts you can put them on ice for 24 hours and eat them. But when they die with the guts still in, bacteria from the guts start to spread through the meat and can make it toxic.
I have known people here in Alaska that got mighty sick from eating dead crabs and shrimp that still had the guts in.

So if I were you I would discard the dead ones.

macarthu is 100% right! First, don't eat them. Toxins begin to break down and spoil the meat as soon as they die.
Second, next time just put a damp cloth over them and keep them in a cool place. You froze them to death. Crabs will live out of the water for several days.

Dead crabs collect bateria quickly. Throw them away. It could give your family stomachaches. When you do catch crabs don't put them on ice or in water. It's best to simply cover the bucket with a damp towel. Crabs could survive for days out of water.

While I agree with the other posts ahead of me, according to the USDA Cold Storage Chart, crab that are kept at 40 °F are safe for up to 24 hours and if frozen up to 4 months.

You can check for yourself here:

Whether or not is worth the risk is entirely on you.
