They sell cardboard shipping tubes for stuff like this. If its a 2 pc rod, I would take it apart and tape it together in several spots using masking tape or the blue painters tape. Then bring it to a shipping company like Fed Ex, or UPS, or maybe even the post office. They should have these tubes for you.

I ship rods all of the time and use nothing but PVC pipe as a shipping container. 3" drain pipe works great if you have larger guides on the rod as you may in a surf rod. Best way is is to get the the right diameter pipe, pack the rod, and then get the dimensions. When shipping a rod, the size will matter more than the weight. If you go over a certain size they will charge up to 72# for a 5# package. Ups has the best choices, and is easy to do. Go to their web site and you can get an estimate or even print your own label, pre-pay, and drop it off any place that has UPS pick up. Just check all the options. One service they have is called 3 Day select and is some times faster and cheaper than ground service. I avoid the post office.

I've shipped my my larger 2 piece rods 14 - 16 footers when assembled around the world a few times in one of those Bazooka tubes. They cost between $39 and $49 at Basspro.com. Just type in Bazooka and you'll see the 2 they offer.

PVC pipe is exactly what you should use just make sure its wide enough to protect the rod even if it gets slightly crushed the rod will be fine, then all you need is the end caps. One thing i used to do when in the tackle business some years ago was to break up Styrofoam and place it in the tube. IT may make a allot of white "dust" but it protects it. Other options are the aluminum tubes available but these can be expensive and scratch easily, or try the lockable rod tubes available
