Catfish are opportunistic feeders..some will eat even when they aren't hungry, but will just because the food is there....Channel Cats are a good example...I have caught many with swollen bellies. Channels don't get very large....but the flat heads..different story. These fish are upwards from 15 to and yes 100 pounds...because they are not scavengers as most think catfish are...they have a certain taste for bait as they mature. They won't take your stink bait, or cut bait..though some might.. they love live bait...shads, telapia, perch....and they are smart...thats how they get to this size. Now noodling ..hehe..thats a good subject.

Genetics + breed.
Flatheads will attain 100+ lbs in the right eco system, and I believe blue catfish will as well. Channel cats will not, nor will the common bullhead (brown and black). Just as you don't
see many 50 pound house cats or 10 pound golden retreivers....genetics. Look at man, it is a rarity when one becomes the size of Shaq, or if a full grown adult doesn't
exceed 4'.

They get old and they just eat and eat and eat. I have a lake and some catfish are over 30 lbs in there. They are only 5-6 years old.

because they are smart, catfish lay on the bottom and wait for their prey.so all they do is lay around and eat.and after they get some weight on them they break every ones line,to catch the big catfish you have to rig for them, very heavy line big strong hook heavy action rod and reel.most people just fish for bream, crappie, bass, and the rig they use wont land a catfish over 10 pounds.so the big ones break the line and get away.and get bigger and bigger.

only a few breeds of catfish get that large.
the size, depends on the location that they life, the quantity & quality of food available, fishing pressure as well as the luck of the fish, to not get caught.

Generally because of their age the older the bigger, the reason they get big is because they learn how to survive, they will eat anything

When they get to a certain size, not many predators want to eat them due to the spikes and bones, I guess. Then they basically eat everything......

They are bottom feeders & live off the waste products of other fish & other decaying organic matter, so there is always plenty of food.
