He's 5'6" but I dont know if height has anything to do with length of the pole. The two I am considering are a 6'6" Shimano AX Spinning combo (http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=336178&kwtid=238543) and a 5'6" South Bend Microlite R2F Panfish Spin Cast (cant find a link). I dont know what any of these words mean and I dont know what to look for! He will probably be fishing mostly in local freshwater lakes for small bass and trout. Please help!!!

He's new to the sport. He goes with a guy he used to work with, maybe once every two weeks. I'd like to spend under or around $30.

Get an ugly stik.......only kidding cents.Yup for us to help you let us know more about him. Just answer Stop Makin Cents Question.

Ok so freshwater fishing on occasion. And under $30.00? That's kind of tough. Under 30.00 and your looking and a pretty bad rod. But Shimano brand has a rod called Convergence and its pretty good. Don't think they have a combo though so you would have to buy a reel and that would put you over to about 60.00. If he doesn't mind losing some rod sensitivity he can go the good ole Ugly Stik route. they have combo packages for 40.00 or so. The reels aren't the best but they are good for someone who doesn't fish all that much. Rhyno brand rods are pretty cheap and you can find them at most retail stores. they aren't the best but it will work until you/he can afford something better. Being that you don't fish (i am assuming this) much of this wont make much sense. Do you know anyone you can take to a tackle shop or store with? Maybe give your boyfriend a giftcard and let him pick it out.

What with your boyfriend just startin' out, the rod/reel combination you picked ie., 6' 6" ShimanoAX is fine. With the flexible line capacities (6 lbs at 200 yards and so on) and it bein' a reputable brand name ~ he'll be in good shape. One thing ya' might consider is goin' to your local, "Wally World" aka Walmart and see if you can find a combo with the same or maybe even better price, biggest thing by goin' this way, you'd be eliminatin' the Shippin' & Handeling costs (yours would be $7.99). Good luck and hope this helps a bit ;)...

Ugly Sticks are pretty common rods. I would stick to the Lite series though. They are more sensitive than the other ones, and about the same price.

Shimano makes good rods and their low level rods are better than many other manufacturers better rods. Go to a good sporting goods store in your area. Some of the guys in the fishing dept are pretty knowledgeable and can help you and show you the differences in rods.

for $ 30.00, you will not get much.
check bass pro shops
i enjoy light tackle fishing in freshwater, bass pro, has a series of rods ( from ultra light, to medium light ) micro-lite.
at this time, they are on sale, for $ 29.99 & you can get a good light weight reel, for $ 30.00 or less.
i currently have about a dozen of those rods, in various lengths & weight size very satisfied with them.
i live on Lake okeechobee in Florida & do a lot of bass fishing with a 7' med light rod. using that, i have caught over 10 bass, 5# & more largest was 8# 14oz, caught on a lizzard

Here are some questions you need to answer first:

1. Is your BF a pretty "hardcore fisherman" or new to the sport?

2. What kind of money do you want to spend?

get him one of those cheap "mickey mouse" or "woodstock" poles, and a gift card. then after xmas the two of you can go shop together and pick one out. it will be a fun thing to do together, and bring you closer. also you'll know it 's the one he really likes cause he will be there (with you ;-) to pick it out.return the cheap pole towards the cost of the real one,or keep it as a momento. priceless!!! it's also a fun type of gift to open, making xmas even more enjoyable!
