S_M_C Your answer has me reeling!
It's obvious you can't get a great gift for $60 for the fisherman but your suggestion would certainly make the ice fishermans dream gift.

pheasant, a fishing hat is a very good idea. I did a blog on my 360 page about a fishermans hat and had not even considered it as a gift. very good idea indeed.

steve, airflo, i for one love multi-tools but have been unable to keep one on a boat for more than a few trips before it goes overboard. i was thinking about some floating fishing pliers maybe but i haven't used them. are they any good?

T, adam, injun, these are all great ideas that won't break my $60 limit, are well received gifts and can help any fisherman. I like the fly tie kit idea, could be educational as well as entertaining and practical. great thought!

LOL@ Pheasant.

3 case's of Vienna sausages & some TP. (lol)

Shoot! A nice grab-bag of lures. Rapala's are like $6 a piece these days!

Am I the only one who is amazed at prices of lures? I was cleaning out the garage the other day, and came across an old Cabelas catalog from 96'. Wow! Big difference in pricing! Esp reels & rods!

A TRACFONE w/ Injun's lawyer on speed-dial.

If they are a fly fisherman, a nice hat is always a good choice

Spin fisherman: a nice assortment of plugs for the bass-man,
a jig making kit for the wall-eye guy, duo-fold underwear+ Adirondack socks for the ice-fisherman, a new filet board+ Rapala filet knife for the panfish guy.

A tip-top repair kit from Cabela's ($14.95) would be welcomed by all, nice assortment of sizes + sizing card and glue stik. Fits in a tackle box for emergency repairs.

The first reel I have now and can vouch for (it's excellent)
Before switching to Shimano. I had the Abu Garcia Cardinal which I used for years, the big trout of the SAN JAUN RIVER was too much for it after all the years of service though, I could have probably bought a new one and been fine.
I got a tackle bag like this one at Walmart, all those different boxes help to sort the differernt lures, lots of room for lots of stuff--> check out the reviews

A fishing vest. Bobbers, jigs. You can get him a cake called The tangled fisherman. Buy him a shirt that relates to fishing.Get him a gift card from academy sports, bass pro shop, or some other place that sells fishing supplies.

I like the Walmart idea only to add a nice stainless steel leatherman with case that attaches to belt. Usually around 45-75 bucks depending what different blade and plier arrangement the tool comes in. 40 yr exp

Hit up the local Wal-Mart type store & get a starter or intermediate fly rod set up. They are about $40 or so. Throw in some cheap flies & book. Then you're done.

Yes it irritates me when all people suggest is a gift certificate, why do they do it, well its because I'm sure they cant think, anyway there are lots of choices as i am sure your aware, firstly it depends on the type of fishing, you cant go far wrong with something that will cover all eventualities, for this a leather-man multi tool or Gerber would be great, whether its for unhooking a fish or fixing the outboard motor on the boat they are fantastic, may i also recommend bass pro for gift ideas, so far its the best list around, try this for when you cant get out to the lake but have that fishing urge

also try leatherman on

(might have over shot your budget on taht one)
last christams i got my father a GPS by garmin, it lets him track all of his favorite fishing spots and has abuilt in fish finder from garmin

Some good items on here too

Hope that helps you and happy holidays!
*added, yes the floating pliers arent bad but what you can do to make sure you dont lose the multi tool is get a simple retractable tool holder(fly fishing type) attach it to the multi tool and clip it on the pouch on your belt, works for me every time.
try the one by simms they last for ages

I would go with a good quality fillet knife. You might even have enough left for one of those diamond knife sharpeners!
