If you are looking to get them for bait many of the local tackle stores will carry them when they are available, Johnny's Sport Shop in Pasadena is one that comes to mind. They are in most of the local waters, just not in the quantity that that is in La. and other places mentioned. One of the bait suppliers used to trap them in the Santa Ana river and another Bass fisherman I know would get his from Sespi Creek in Ventura county by Filmore.

For eating you might want to take a look at Big Bear lake above San Bernardino or any of the lakes in that area. I have seen pictures of some from this lake and they are huge. The only other place I have heard that people go to get them for eating is Lake Cachuma by Santa Barbara. I had one customer who bought traps and went there on a regular basis.

I used to go to asian markets at Atlanta's international village to buy live crawfish for baits. They are really cheap. Maybe you could try to find that kind of stores around you.

There was this once, I didn't use them all and wanted to give the rest to a pet store near my house. They were suprised and said, these must be pretty expensive, while looking at the little ones they sell in their own tank.
