Do all humans naturally perceive life through the eyes of the past? And that what we perceive in others is distorted by our own perception of ourselves that we directly or indirectly struggle with? And if we are only responsive by what is a reflection of what has been impressed upon us, then does this make our very nature mechanical and only reflexive in general? Are we nothing more than trained minds? Seems like we are continually training our minds to certain set patterns, and all of life is the adopting/adapting of set patterns.

Thank you for replying

I have studied Buddhism for the last two months, as I know the Buddha did not encourage following his teachings without research. I became interested after reading the four noble truths and eightfold path, these symbolized my world views and what I would like to strive to become.

I have great respect for how Buddhists conduct themselves, as they have great respect for all people and life. I have learned a great deal about the principles of Buddhism and the history of the teachings.

There is a Theravada temple in my town, and I was wondering how I should go about furthering myself in the teachings of the Buddha? I have already began striving for deeper meditation. What do they usually do at temples, are they just a place for meditation? What ettiquete should I use to avoid offending anyone?

Please do not come and proclaim your religion, whatever it may be, as absolute truth and be hateful, there are many other threads in which you can do that in.

Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. - Buddha

As someone who was raised very religious and who has followed the teachings of Jesus (turn the other cheek, what you do unto the least of us...) all my life even after becoming "nonreligious" I must ask. Why do so many "believers" have NO sense of humor?

Do you think the man never laughed? Was every single moment of his life documented?
Gee wiz, I know I'd rather have a beer with him than Bush.

Remember satan telling Adam and Eve, that if they disobeyed God, concerning the tree, that they would not die? Yet, they did die! He was the father of the first lie! some thousands of years later, satan still implies that black is White, and that White is Black.
Today, many people go to church, and they say, it's ok to be gay, or, its ok, to steal, etc. And they always use the exscuse,..."God loves everybody. Well, if that were the case, the why, did God destroy isrealites for disobediance? He (God), clearly loved Adam, and Eve, yet, they "WERE" punished for disobediance. I want to know why this happens today, among people, they disobey the Bible, and exscuse it away with, "God loves everybody." And do not give me the old testiment, new testiment lingo. The Bible plainly states, that God is "UNCHANGING" in his Statutes.

Atheists unit!!! lol. But yeah, why do people think that just because we don't believe in god, we're horrible, murdering, raping, pedophillic, satanist, evil beings? Personally every single person I've ever met that has been an atheist is extremely nice and moral. Including myself. When will religions start to realize we don't have to be sheep and believe something just because we are told to?

First of all I have no disrespect for anyones beliefs, but Im just curious..why do some of you state tings like "I know he's real for a factl", "I have proof", things of that nature. Shouldn't you be saying I BELIEVE instead of I KNOW? Same goes for Atheists. I just don't get why all you act like you know everything? These are beliefs people. I feel like you should do what helps you out in life some need certain guidelines, others want to be more free and live by what they think, nothing wrong with either of those, all I'm saying quit acting like YOUR way is the RIGHT way alright, peace.
