To me, it means that one shouldn't just believe what they read or hear... no matter who it comes from. You should use your common sense to determine if something is, or even could be, correct.

It sugguests that you shouldn't take people's word for it. Technically, that would mean a lot of people wouldn't believe in evolution because, while it's science, it's also very complex science. Unfortunately, those things that we can apply to say "Don't buy into religious cults" could technically apply to the application of science (for those who aren't intelligent enough to understand it).
