One of the biggest misconceptions about Islam is that the punishment for apostating is death. The most important point to understand here is that there are conditions to it. To give a simple analogy, if you know that a person is a traitor, such that he is spreading lies about you and revealing your secrets, then he is actually helping the enemy. In essence, everyone understands that, in any country in the world a traitor is put to death.
