What is the value of religion???

Man need any kind of religion. They need something that kind make them consider the reason why we exist, why we have to go through so much pain and trouble, why there is so much destruction, be it natural or man caused.
If you don want to bother about anything else but your well being, your comfort and YOU, then religion has no use for you for you are much too concerned with the ilusion of yourself to face it.
Religion is different from religious groups. Some people don't need to go to church or a temple to show others they are religious. They might not need to consider a single type of religious group as being the only one. God made us all. We are different, we may speak different languages, and because of that it is most of the time so hard to understand each other. But every human being functions the same way, have the same needs, and although on the surface things look so different, like for instance Japanese is different from Greek, the basic meanings are the same, for people share that in common just by being human. Religion is Loving and growing. it is trying not to destroy yourself or the world around you.
All you need is love.

Religion in and of itself isn't worth much. A lot of times it does more harm than good. The only way our "religious" activities have any value at all is if they are our response to the love of God and the outflow of a living, vital relationship with Him. His love for me, my love for Him, my amazement at His offer of salvation and my gratitude for the radical way in which He has changed my life all move me to want to respond to Him. That response comes in many forms, some of which are activities that can be mere religion (like going to church, reading the Bible, praying) - or they can be opportunities to interact with the living God, to worship Him and to serve Him by serving others.

The book of James says, "If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as true and faultless is this: to look after widows and orphans in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." That's the kind of religion that has value.

Very hard question for me, as I really don't know...
To understand that sharing is better than greed.
To understand that caring and helping are better than hurting and stealing, etc.
To learn that we are connected to each other, and to the universe , and NOT alone.
To respect family and community.
To respect ourselves.
There are values to religion I can't express - as I am not educated. I will learn with you as I read all the answers you'll get...

I've never been religious, but I can see that it may fulfill certain desires in people - for something to look up to, to bolster their ego, to give a sense of community, to give simplistic answers to complex questions, and so on.

Think of all the nut jobs you know that are christians..... If it wasnt for their fear of hell..... what -would- they be doing right now ;)
