I grew up going to church (Presbyterian) --lived in a small town---never really heard the word lesbian or gay until I went out in the world and got a job at a large company---I became friends with a lot of different people--including gay people---I have admit -although I don't go to church like I did when I was younger--I have very strong beliefs in God and pray every night before I go to bed---there are so many different opinions about this ---most of them I don't like---I was raised by my parents and my preacher to love ---everybody--like God would---oh I have my moments--but I was taught to never "look down my nose" at anyone---anyone------I watch the news--I read the newspaper---internet etc........does anyone really have a professional opinion on this---?? A real one---not what they believe but what is really written in the Bible? Is it a sin to be gay?

Fasting in the month of Ramadan is done during the daylight hours. Moslems eat before sunrise and after sunset. So, what happens with Moslems living above the Arctic circle where it is 24 hrs night at this time of year. Are they expected to fast? What about those living below the Antarctic circle where it is 24Hrs light. Do they have to fast without eating for the entire month seeing that the sun never sets? It seems that the further south from the equator that a Moslem lives the more they are penalised during Ramadan as the nights get shorter and the days get longer.

There is no god and YOU know it.

When will we end this preposterous charade?

(PREPOSTEROUS: so foolish or pointless as to be worthy of scornful laughter)

We all know the accepted (polite?) response is "thank you", but as an atheist, you probably find the entire notion silly. At the same time, it's kind of rude (or at least standoffish) to not acknowledge peoples kindness (however deluded.) So what do YOU do.

When I was much younger, I used to ignore people, but nowadays I figure giving them a quick "thanks" (while rediculous) helps grease the social wheels and keeps people happy... something theists and atheists alike can agree the world is sorely lacking.

In most things, it's generally easy to know who is responsible for proving something. Religion is different. Burden of proof lies with the one making the extraordinary claim. To atheists, the theist makes an extraordinary claim by saying an omnipotent god exists yet cannot be seen. To the theist, the atheist makes the extraordinary claim by going against the long held belief that there is no god or gods. To me, it seems that in religion burden of proof and who it lies with depends on your stance. If you're theist, it lies with the atheist and vice versa. What do you guys think? Who has to prove to the other side that they are right with empirical evidence?

Have you accepted Jesus as your personal saviour, regularly read the Word of God (Bible of 66 books), and regularly go to church? If so, respond here :) I'm just curious about how many fellow believers visit and post on this site. Please, no flaming, but if you aren't a Christian and would still like to respond with a "no", feel free to do so.

I remember as a kid in school we're taught that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was the founder of Islam and that Islam is the youngest of all religions.

But by and by, I'm begining to learn that Islam is a very old religion, and also the fact that Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) was the first propagator of Islam.

This is very very confusing to me. Conventional academic books portray Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as the founder of Islam and devout Muslims claim that he's only one of the many prophets.

Therefore, if Islam is such an old religion then from where did Judaism and Christianity spring up?!?!

Also, if Prophet Jesus (pbuh) is a prophet of Islam as many Muslims claim then I'd like to know whether Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) celebrated Christmas and Jewish festivals?

My mother keeps telling me that she is a witch (meaning the true sense of the word) and talks often of spells that she got off the internet and says that she is a Wiccan - however, when asked about the Pentacle, and what the 5 points mean, she corrects me to pentagram and says that each point is for the wounds inflicted on christ's hands and feet and the crown of thorns.
She said she wanted me to explore Wicca, and gave me Bucklands guide to Wicca. I read the history in the front of the book which outlines the Wiccan version of Christian history. They seem to directly oppose one another. When questioning mom about it, we got into such a heated debate about it that I wasn't able to get any further in my explorations of the religion, but I must confess to being interested in learning more. Please help mom and me put this debate to rest. Sources would be VERY helpful too.

Some MF'ers picked a best answer that was BS so i'll rephrase... Truely knowledgeable people of science believe in a higher intelligence, how else could they continually search for new knowledge. Truely religous people believe there is a point to Life, and value no life over other life. My faith is in both of these and therefor my belief is that GOD is the Intelligence that was before Life as we know it and shall be there after. The Infinite Intelligence, if you will. What say you Athiest? What say you 'Christian? Ethical Fundamentalist? Do I have the Idea of GOD figured, can EVERYONE move on to something else? or would That call for too much faith?
