I attend a weekly local neighbourhood fellowship in a neighbour's house (there are about 6-8 who attend). I am the youngest attendee and have a very youthful outlook on life. The problem is, the whole time I am there is spent talking about everyone's illnesses and this brings me down and I find it depressing being there. Yes, the conversation does get around to the bible, etc, but still most of it is about sickness/death and illness. I feel guilty if I don't go, yet when I'm there I come back depressed. I'm not a doctor and feel I shouldn't have to put up with this kind of talk, but being a christian, I feel I have to sympathise and empathise. I too have my fair share of problems, but wouldn't think to burden anyone. It's like being in an old people's home! The 'leader' of the group phones me to tell me who's got something wrong with them and who is the latest person to have died that she knows. I was wondering if anyone might give their opinion.

I’m really interested to here from anyone who used to be religious. What was it that made you give up your belief?

To start things off my in-laws’ used to be Christians and regularly donated money to the church. But when their daughter (my wife) was very young she got cancer. All their Christian friends felt very awkward and basically abandoned them. My in-laws couldn’t believe this, so they stopped going to church and put their faith in the doctors instead. They didn’t disappoint as the therapy worked and she was cured.

I myself have never been religious. I was lucky as my family never forced ideas on me. I was left to make up my own mind and realised early on that all that stuff didn’t match up with what happens in the real world.

A request to Christians, please no bible quotes. I wouldn’t quote you something out of ‘Lord of the Rings’ and expect you to believe it is true just because it is written in a book. If you wish to comment please keep it constructive. Thanks.

I'm just so curious as to what people think about this. I think that we ourselves are constantly, even to the day that we die, changing our opinions or our lifestyles. So is there some sort of core the human self? (Such as a soul...?) Or is our constantly changing self mean that others are constantly changing also. Can we really know someone, or are we just informed and acquainted with their molding core? Can we ever truly know ourselves....??
