Portuguese and Spanish OR Spanish and Italian?
My family is Portuguese and I was having a discussion with an Italian friend. I told him my opinion that I believe Portuguese and Spanish are very close languages and that I have actually had a conversation with a spanish person; they spoke in Spanish and I spoke in Portuguese and we completely understood each other. Then my Italian friend said that he finds Spanish and Italian more similar then Portuguese and Spanish.
What is your take on this?

If you just looked at a map, you would guess that Calais, France would have the most closely related speech - it's so close to Dover.

Wondering what language you feel has the most overlap in pronunciation and diction. Especially interested in the opinion of people who actually know Dutch, German or Norwegian.

And yes, "American English" I know. But seriously ...

I am on a take multiple choice questions (homework) and I am struggling with reading the passage.

The line is:
"I am not at all sure that the majority of the human race have not been ugly"

I am not sure how to translate it, as to whether it will be a positive or negetive statement.

It is not a manner of vocabulary. I know what the words mean...
Its a matter of syntax.
Thanks.

I want a tattoo, and I want it to say either "Bring on the night" or "The Killer in Me" in Latin.

Can anyone help me with this? I would like it as exact as possible, since it is after all a tattoo I will have on me for the rest of my life.

Thanks!

I really want to be able to speak Spanish fluently but I don't really have the time or money to take Spanish classes. I've had a lot of Brazilian friends so I can understand some Portuguese which I know is very similar to Spanish. How can I learn to speak Spanish fluently!?

Also, how do I ask "So who is your lab partner?" in Spanish.

A french friend of mine asked me to explain when to use the prepositions "at" and "to" in english. The problem is that in French they have one prepstion to mean both "at" and "to". I can think of loads of examples where these prepositions are used, but i can't think of any hard and fast rules! any ideas?
(et, si qqn parle le francais, je serais reconaissant si l'on peut repondre en francais, c'est plus facile pour moi comme ca! merci!)
