Portuguese and Spanish OR Spanish and Italian?
My family is Portuguese and I was having a discussion with an Italian friend. I told him my opinion that I believe Portuguese and Spanish are very close languages and that I have actually had a conversation with a spanish person; they spoke in Spanish and I spoke in Portuguese and we completely understood each other. Then my Italian friend said that he finds Spanish and Italian more similar then Portuguese and Spanish.
What is your take on this?

Portuguese and Spanish are not mutually intelligible despite their close relationship. So, if you are Portuguese and claim you can perfectly understand a Spanish speaker, I think you're telling a fib.

Ladino or Judaeo-Spanish is closer to Spanish than Portuguese and comprehension will not always be perfect even between two people who speak these languages.

Ladino speakers still use some older Spanish words from the 15th century like candelicas (candles), canteca (song), mancepo (boy), rapoza (fox), fizhica / hizhica (daughter) and el lunar (moonlight) but Modern Spanish velas, canción, muchacho, zorro, hija, la luz de la luna.

While the Spanish lexicon is closer to Portuguese than Italian, Spanish pronunciation is more like Italian.

Portuguese pronunciation shows signs of influence from a pre-Roman language not found in Spanish. However, we don't know whether it is Iberian, Celtic or Carthaginian (Phoenecian).

Spanish and Italian are similar.

Portuguese and Spanish are similar.

All romance languages are similar.

Portuguese and Spanish are more similar though. They are the most closely related. Some even consider them dialects, rather than separate languages.
