How do you say "I want you" without saying "I love you"? Te quiero=I love you, well, here in Spain it does. Is it "Quiero de ti"? A bit of a shady question, I know.

My boyfriend who speaks English and Spanish always calls me "un amor." I can speak Spanish pretty well and I know it's literal translation...but my friend also told my boyfriend "tu novia es un amor." "A love" or "one love" really isn't used in English...so what does this mean? Exactly that?

Dear Percy,
It has been many years since I last wrote to you. How have you been, and your family? You last wrote that you had 2 children, I'll bet they are quite grown now. I read something recently on the internet from Brazil, about Bode having passed away in 1993, is that true, and what happened? If that is true, I am very sorry to hear this. He was the first one of your family I met. I am very interested to know if Elke is happy and well. My children are grown now. I am still in Minnesota, but in a new area. I've been married to my second wife for 18 years. I have always remembered your family for their hospitality and love to me, and I have always loved you and your family. I hope you are doing well, and please write back if you want to.

I heard this somewhere. Also, isn't Norwegian a West Scandinavian language, putting it in the same boat as Icelandic, which is supposedly the closest to Old Norse?

I'm wondering if there is a general rule in determining words that are masculine, feminine or neuter.

If there is what is the rule.

LIke in spanish El Nino is masculine, where as La Nina is feminine.

I study French. This is my effort to translate a couple paragraphs of an article from Le Monde Diplomatique: http://www.monde-diplomatique.fr/1991/07/LIAUZU/14866

Comments or corrections from anyone who knows French well are welcome. Thanks

Racism, xenophobia: what to do?

A checkup on French society reveals a serious problem: over the past ten years, according to official statistics, racist threats and assaults have grown by 14 and 16 times respectively. Antisemitism is becoming less and less taboo. According to recent opinion polls 24% of people asked believe there are too many Jews in France, and 71% that there are too many Arabs. Racism is pervasive: 45% understand voting in favor of the National Front.

Thus, it is urgent to react to this danger, to counter the political expression of popular nationalism found among the National Front, to counter the establishment of neofascism on a European scale that Etienne Balibar brought to light in November 1990's Le Monde Diplomatique.

I have observed that Latin Americans speak Spanish at a very rapid pace, but when I watch films from the country of Spain, the speech pacing seems much softer and easier to listen to, as well as to discern. I do not speak Spanish. I hope Spanish-speaking people here can answer my question.

Is there any significant difference between how people from the country of Spain speak Spanish, versus how Mexicans and other Latin Americans speak Spanish?
