I see a great demotivation in our society as compared with other cultures whose children routinely grow up bilingual, trilingual and routinely multilingual.

It is such a rush to be bilingual. I've studied Spanish in public schools since age 12. I'm 37 and a Spanish teacher. This has come through hard work, practice and from the personal enjoyment I receive by communicating with native speakers.

I've accomplished my own bilingualism but I find it difficult to motivate the average high school student.

The US educational system is at fault too for wasting time with teaching techniques and curriculum that don't get results.

Imagine teaching math to students who after years of study and practice, can't add, subtract nor mulitply.

Most schools don't begin teaching languages in the early grades and that is probably our biggest mistake.

Until Americans see the benefits of learning other languages I don't see the motivation level likely to occur. Suggestions?

Lately Italian Parlement passed an act (legge[act ] 8 february 2006, no. 54) that emended civil code provisions about child custody (art.155 and following).

Under new provisions, as a rule, the judge orders a joint custody to both parents.
But a judge can decide otherwise and give custody to one parent only; in the latter case the judge has to detail why in his opinion.

I don’t know cases about one foreign citizen’s children decided under the new law.
But usually a judge has to reckon with risk that his decision could not be enforced in a foreign country (ie that the foreign parent don’t gives back child when deadline comes).

I am a student living and studying Chinese in Beijing. I am looking for a small electronic dictionary which is not too expensive and has a touch screen on which I can write any unknown characters and will then recognise them and give me the English translation as using a radical index in a chinese dictionary can be a laborious exercise. Does anyone have any good suggestions of models and websites from which I may purchase them?

I'm still in university but I would like to start my translation business (as a freelancer) this summer. I live in The Netherlands and will be providing translations in English, Spanish and Dutch. I would like to do business internationally therefore the name has to be easy in most languages. It does not necessarily have to reflect the business that I'm in, it can also be a non-existing but catchy word.

I'm open for suggestions!
