I am a student living and studying Chinese in Beijing. I am looking for a small electronic dictionary which is not too expensive and has a touch screen on which I can write any unknown characters and will then recognise them and give me the English translation as using a radical index in a chinese dictionary can be a laborious exercise. Does anyone have any good suggestions of models and websites from which I may purchase them?

Yeah, Besta is a good brand. Here's the site for Besta:

It's better to buy from electronic stores or larger bookstores, so you can try them out. Some models also function as palm pilots, compatible with your windows system. They are more expensive. A basic one should be about few hundred RMB.

As you are already in Beijing, you have the best opportunity to get the best & cheapest one right where you are. Just ask around shops, your teachers, your school mates where & how. The Chinese students there are all learning English so all or many of them will know.

If you're living in Beijing, you can certainly go to an electronics store and find them there. If you have to order one online, you can try searching Google for "Besta" brand. Mine has a touch screen and recognizes handwritten characters.
