Help we are scared...............

2007-05-20 11:47:59 · 15 answers · asked by nunes_judy 2

So what, you've lived a long time. That doesn't mean you're any smarter than I am. I'm 37 and I've seen, done, and lived a lot in my life. I've had to deal with things that you probably never had to deal with when you were 37. I've seen drugs and crime rates soar through the roof. You grew up in more innocent times. How does this make you wiser than me? I'm so tired of senior citizens thinking we young people don't know anything. Get off your high horse and maybe we could actually learn from each other.

Are you lonesome tonight? Does your tummy feel tight?
Did you bring your mylanta, and tums?

Does your memory stray, to that bright sunny day,
When you had all your teeth, and your gums?

Is your hairline receding? Your eyes growing dim?
Hysterectomy for her, and its prostate for him.

Does your back give you pain? Do your knees predict rain?
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

Is your blood pressure up? Good cholesterol down?
Are you eating your low fat cuisine?

lf that oat bran and fruit, Metamucil to boot.
Helps you run like a well oiled machine.

If it's football or baseball, He sure knows the score.
Yes, he knows where it's at, but forgets what it's for.

So your gallbladder's gone, But your gout lingers on,
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

When you're hungry, he's not, when you're cold, he is hot,
Then you start that old thermostat war.

When you turn out the light, he goes left and you go right,
Then you get his great symphonic snore.

He was once so romantic, so witty and smart;
How did he turn out to be such a cranky old fart?

So don't take any bets, it's as good as it gets,
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

They ought to say senior citizens if it's just for the old folks.

Foreigners will no longer be allowed to bring over their parents.

Because of Clinton, elderly people that legally immigrate here are automatically entitled to Social Security, Medicaid, Food Stamps, and subsidized housing (in most states). Those that are not old enough to collect S.S.I. are entitled to welfare.

Because of Clinton's legislation (1999), in 1999 there were 420,000 legal immigrants that were eligible for social security insurance and Medicaid. Over 250,000 elderly legal immigrants were eligible for food stamps. And 750,000 legal immigrants were eligible for food stamps.

Scenario: Elderly parents (83/84), financially secure though not well off, failing health, living in own home. Only surviving child is 52, has chronic illness, lives 850 miles away with new husband, starting new life. Moving to city where her parents live is only possible if done without her husband.

Parents think she should come live with them until they pass on and take care of them. (Mother is mentally ill, father is alcoloic, both were abusive parents, but always helped daughter financially).

What are your thoughts?

Why should a person get a discount for the same thing others buy, simply because that person is over 50? Over 60?

Is this fair to the young couple in their 20's with 2 kids, scaping to get by?

There are a LOT of people over 65 who have PLENTY of money - statistically it's the richest generation. Is it fair for young people to pay mroe than the elderly for the same goods and services? Is this not age-based discrimination?

As some of you may already know a 91 year old WW II Vet in Michigan was beaten on May 4 by a 22 year old boy just so he could steal his car. He brutually punched this senior citizen 21 times in the head. What is even more horrifying is that a large group of bystanders just stood there and did absolutely nothing. The 22 year old has been arrested and is in jail with 75k straight bond. You can read the new article at this website (this is the direct link to they story) and they also have a video. The video was horrid. It absolutely made me sick to my stomach. I am 22 years old and I would never ever do something like that. But what I need your help with is- and I need all the help I can get. I am writing a letter to the county prosecutor that can in turn be given to the judge when it goes to court. I am tired of people getting a slap on the wrist for crimes against the elderly. Please all you need to do is just ask for the judge to give the maximum sentence to this man for beating

Why do you do it?

2007-05-18 06:11:58 · 12 answers · asked by Anonymous

I am younger than 30 but have great respect for people older than me, especially seniors. I feel, however, that I am a minoroty in this aspect. I would not be who I am or where I am if it were not for the care from people who are older than me. All I can do to repay the favor is to show kindness to seniors and help them out in the ways they want and need.

What can be done to generate more of this type of respect for seniors?

I've posted question in the past where I have asked if it would be possible to make male friends and have a significant other if you are an unattractive male, and have had people say that this was a possibility. I would be ling if I were to say that I haven't found a bit of hope in the idea that this is true, but it seems to contradict my own personal life experience. I guess it would be best to talk a little bit about myself. I'm 26 years old, 6' tall 180 lbs. brown eyes, brown hair. My face isn't that attractive, but I'm always well groomed and dress kind of in a buisness-causual type of way (button down shirts, with khakis etc) I have a military type hair cut and again I always have a neat appearance. Even though I try to take care of myself, I've never been able to meet someone that wanted to be my friend or significant other. I even have experiebces where I'm waiting for a bus and will have teenage guys scream at me. It makes me feel like a f****** a******.

Seniors pay "income" tax on 85% of their Social Security Tax. This is not "income" at all, but a social insurance into which they paid for more than 20 years, in some cases 30, 40 and 50 years. Also, people earning over $100,000 pay proportionately less tax with all the tax breaks they have been given by the Republican congresses of the past 10 years. Married People with Children pay even less tax. While Since people with no dependents, pay all the taxes that married people with children, and Billionaires don't pay.

Someone has to pay the taxes that support this "greatest country on earth" ... and the burden seems to be falling on those who can least afford it.

Do you feel this is fair?

If not are you willing to tell your Congress person so, and specifically Speaker Pelosi? Thank you for your thoughtful answer.

why is it that young people are constantly seen as ageist against old people when more than often its the other way round (talking from personal experience),with ignoring young people in shops,to banning people in school uniform (no other uniform) from shops and cafes,to security guards following young people around shops,to a sign near my college saying 'do you know were your #children# are?teenagers are the main cause for crime and vandalism'.that is ageism!not all young people are thiefs and vandals and the minority who are arent going to stop when they hit 18.

I'm trying to determine who would be eligable for the senior discount...Is it at 55 or when someone reaches retirement age?

2007-05-14 02:44:11 · 25 answers · asked by wwpetcemetery 5

I look at my Social (In)Security statement every year, and all things being equal -- that is, if I'm still physically able to work that long -- it's a no-brainer; I plan to keep at it until at least 70 and possibly beyond. Lacking a huge nest-egg and with a 401K that didn't get off the ground until my 40s, that's the option I've left myself.

But financial considerations aside, I like what I do for a living and firmly believe that working is a good thing even if you can afford to retire earlier. My 70-something mom still works so that's been my example. What do you think? Are you counting the days until you can say "take this job and ...", or is employment in some form part of your senior scenario?

I started collecting OTR because I was having some eye trouble, but I got myself hooked. Now, if I've got a choice between "Survival" on TV or Lux Radio Theatre on my MP3 player. I listen to Lux and maybe do some whittling or making a new baby in the family a Dream Catcher.
