As some of you may already know a 91 year old WW II Vet in Michigan was beaten on May 4 by a 22 year old boy just so he could steal his car. He brutually punched this senior citizen 21 times in the head. What is even more horrifying is that a large group of bystanders just stood there and did absolutely nothing. The 22 year old has been arrested and is in jail with 75k straight bond. You can read the new article at this website (this is the direct link to they story) and they also have a video. The video was horrid. It absolutely made me sick to my stomach. I am 22 years old and I would never ever do something like that. But what I need your help with is- and I need all the help I can get. I am writing a letter to the county prosecutor that can in turn be given to the judge when it goes to court. I am tired of people getting a slap on the wrist for crimes against the elderly. Please all you need to do is just ask for the judge to give the maximum sentence to this man for beating

Of course this is going to happen that is the way our society is-but what we can do is give max sentences instead of a slap on the wrist all the time and that may help prevent some

In this our brutal western, capitalistic society, the young and the beautiful reign while the old are discarded, oftentimes. They get away with it because older people are not deemed as valuable as younger people. They're "useless" in the eyes of many.
I don't think that's true, though. I think they are valuable. They may be old(er), but they do have one thing we don't: experience and wisdom!

This is truly a terrible story. I, like you, think that the law should have provisions for increased sentences for crimes against particularly defenseless people. Children, senior citizens, the disabled, and any other people who are more vulnerable than others should have extra protection. Some states have enacted special "abuse of the elderly" laws or similar. Your best bet would probably be to write and lobby your state legislature and representatives to enact laws to this effect.

In the old days, when police caught someone who did such a heinous crime, they would enforce a little "instant justice" if you know what I mean. We can't do that anymore, of course.

It's Detroit, what did you expect? Up north where I live, Alpena, MI. We've had 2 horrid things happen in the past month.
1) five boys caused a fire in the woods, because the dog they lit on fire, with gas and a lighter, got out of the tent. The dogs name was Tank and he was a very sweet dog.
2) some 19 year old kid, ran over a three year old and stopped, looked, and took off because he noticed that the kid was really messed up and he didn't want to get into trouble.

Don't worry, I'll write to the judge. It really makes me sick.

There's too many evil children and adults in this world.

A similar story just happened in New York, were a 90-something year old woman was beaten and robbed. They are enacting a law that has much longer mandatory sentences for those that victimize the elderly. I think all states should do this.

personnaly, i dont believe in sending people to prison , Life is short and the taking of lifes time is cruel! Rather Ild see that the young man was subjected to 21 punches in the face, have all his belongings taken away, and then be told to work hard and replace every one of them in 3 months without outside help, or then be subjected to 21 more punches!

respect is a two way street - over the past 40 years today's seniors were the ones who age segregated themselves (ourselves - I'm a senior, too) in senior centers, public transit and senior communities.

Today's kids have not grown up among seniors, especially on public transit instead of their own segregated yellow bussing system, to learn that they could earn money from them by doing odd jobs and by learning from them by asking what everyone calls dumb questions.

I've been predicting what's happening now for the past 20 years but nobody cared because nobody wanted to think about it. This is only the tip of the iceberg of what's going to begin happening when it comes to juvenile crime.

If someone did that to my 81 yo WWII grandpa or my dead ILL state trooper gpa I would literally kill that person. I would tie him to a chair and beat him until my hands were broken then I would use my feet, until his life was over. I saw that video and I didn't even know the old man but I wanted to beat the **** out of that jackass who was beating him.
PS I'm usually not a violent person, but that **** just sets me off.

It's horrible enough to be robbed, but to beat the poor old man down like he could defend himself is just plain hidious. If the SOB is low enough to do this, he will do anything. He should never be able to walk freely again. Maybe someone in the jail will get to him before he makes bail.

I hesitated to e-mail the Wayne County Prosecutor because the law is not applied evenly. This boy is black and a white boy would get a lighter sentence for the same crime, hence the higher "statistics" for black youth. A white youth would get house arrest or probation/. I asked the judge to be fair. He needs counseling and rehabilitation.
