Of all the continents Africa is without doubt the poorest, few countries on this continent are well governed and are generally ruled by despots and the people have been worse off since the end of colonialism, Why is this?

When I grew up, our town was very friendly, and all sorts of people lived there. We had Irish Catholics, Italians, Jews, Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists. There were Asians, Latinos, White and Blacks, Republicans and Democrats. There was no racial violence, no hate crimes, no one forced anyone to say "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays." Now I live in the deep South, and I'm afraid to tell people I'm Jewish, let alone a Democrat. People here seem mean and mean spirited towards anyone they view as an "outsider." If you don't go to the same school, the same church, etc., you're looked down upon. Is this happening across the country? What happened to our "melting pot" mentality? Why have people become so mean and isolationist? I don't care about what a person's religion is, what his/her ethnicity, skin color, sexual orientation or politics. I care if he or she is a nice, decent person or not. That's the way I was raised, but I don't see today's kids being raised that way.

I read in a recent newspaper report that fairer/taller people earn more. One shade ligher is worth one year of additional education and one inch in heigth is worth 1% increase in wages.

Have you seen that happen?

I worked with a black girl and almost got her fired, I was a real ***** to her but when my husband died she showed so much compassion,even more than my white friends. I've changed now but I can't get rid of the guilt, she took my kids to school for me when I was depressed, did the shopping and cooked for me and them. I now know that good people can be found in all races and I will never disrespect a person of another race. Do you think people will look at me funny if I join a racial equality group?

Far too much public money is wasted on treating homosexuals differently to others which seems to be a contrary to the aims of those who want equal rights.
It seems to me that heterosexuals get the sharp end of the stick these days.

I'm sure people from these areas are lovely people but, my goodness when they open their mouth, it makes me cringe.
