I worked with a black girl and almost got her fired, I was a real ***** to her but when my husband died she showed so much compassion, even more than my white friends. I've changed now but I can't get rid of the guilt, she took my kids to school for me when I was depressed, did the shopping and cooked for me and them. I now know that good people can be found in all races and I will never disrespect a person of another race. Do you think people will look at me funny if I join a racial equality group?

For those of you who asked, she wasn't my maid and she wasn't at risk of being deported as my company had brought her here for training purposes. She's a succesful, glamorous woman who had nothing to gain from helping me. I had always believed that no-one does something for nothing but she really changed my opinion.I was jealous of her I guess in the beginning because she had achieved so much at such a young age.

People are very forgiving. Nobody will fault you for doing something good. When we make mistakes, it is good when we can learn from them.

I saw the same thing happen in Green Bay, WI
A North Korean girl took the Grey Hound bus to UW-Stevens Point from Chicago and ended up having to spend the night in Green Bay.
She spoke very little English and was just told to find a hotel during a Green Bay Packer game. The bus won't run until the next day--it was late.
A black woman from Chicago or Milwaukee was the only person kind enough to helped walked her across the street to an Asian Grocery Market and asked for help. I was shopping there so I asked some Asians to give her a ride to UW-Stevens Point!!!!
I am not even Korean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and I know Koreans would not do the same thing

Im sorry for yr loss. Sometimes God takes ppl away from us so that we can gain another person who will also be there to care of us. I dont think that you should feel out of place if you join a group. I am sure that they will accept you with open arms. You are uniting for a common cause and i am sure that race wont be an issue if they see your stance is on the same page as theirs

I am so sorry for your husband! Hope you stay strong. I am glad that you have realized that racism isn't a good thing. It puts people down. The Golden Rule still applies after kindergarten :) That's my motto on racism. It's okay to stand up for people that you have put down. It's healthy for you and your family! Your friend is a very nice person for taking care of you, even though you hurt her. She forgave you; that's a courageous thing to do. I also forgive, although I don't know you, and I'm sure that others do too. You can make it through! Good luck to your husband and your kids, bless you.

Wow...That's the power of God working in and through her. She clearly has the Holy Spirit in her.
Who cares if people look at you funny? Now that you've had such a life changing experience, I'd say it's your responsibility to help change other people's lives too.
One of the greatest repayments you can give her is to tell her how she's helped you and not to let it end there.
Also consider joining a chuch to continue growing.

When I was very young I used to think that black people were ugly.
This was because they were an unusual sight in that there were not many black people living in this country.
As I grew older and the number of black people in this country increased and I became familiarised with them my views changed.
I now realise that black people are as good looking, and as ugly, as us.
You too have learned from experience and should be congratulated for realising how wrong you were.
Forget the colour thing, it's how people treat you and respect you that matters when you judge them.
Do what you feel is right.

I wish there was more people like you in this bitchy world! Everyone is a racist it seems! Like I take a bus to school and our school is an Arabic school (I'm talking about in the Middle East!). Then there was this new girl from South Africa who was white and blonde and the driver (Arabic) went to their house the nxt morning and didn't even wait for half a minute! She lived in an apartment and I thought maybe she's having trouble with the stairs or something and we should wait but he left immediately. At other people's houses he'd even wait for more than 5 mins. I was totally appauled by that!
But humans are forgiving. I think she'll forgive you. Just tell her 'Thanx for all you have done. I really apreciated it. And I'm sorry about my attitude towards you in the past. I was really mean. I just want you to forgive me. I've learnt.' or something like that.
*I'm so sorry to hear about your husband!*

Prejudice is unfortunately natural. We prefer people who are similar to us. This is the reason racism (and many other isms) is so prevalent in society. As we mix more, we experience people from other backgrounds and cultures and from other races and start seeing the similarities instead of the differences.
Although racism is natural it is not good. That you have learned from your experience shows that you are a good person, despite your previous behaviour, which can be explained (if possibly not excused) as being due to ignorance.
I say who cares how people look at you for joining a racial equality group. If you can share your experiences and help others then good for you, good for them, and good for society as a whole. If people look at you badly for it then this is their problem and you're better off knowing this weakness in them.

Why would people look at you funny? Surely the only people that need know are the ones in the group and they will be of the same mindset as you.
Tough lesson to learn but at least you now know that we are all the same, regardless of skin colour.
