Ever since high school, I was always confused by that phrase. I can only assume that people who use it have never read the book (I think this is a fair assumption).

In Uncle Tom's Cabin (Harriet Beecher Stowe) it is true that Tom was on overseer of sorts, but he was hated by the plantation owner for refusing to whip other slaves, in fact he was whipped for refusing to whip others. Tom ultimately was beaten to death because he talked other slaves into escaping and refused to give any information as to their whereabouts.

Uncle Tom sacrificed himself for the cause (and he was about to become a free man).

So why do we call people Uncle Toms?

I did not drink many sodas for years but in the past year I have realized I traded half of my usual coffee imbibing up for Coca-Cola. The calories, the acid--I don't care at this point. I want sugar and caffiene.
I tell myself well it is cheaper than Crown Royal...and I don't become loop legged.
There a ton of other things I do that are not the healthiest, but hey have to save somethings for future Q's & A's.

Most of us seniors here grew up in the beginnings of the rock n roll era. Music has progressed a lot since then, and there have been some really great new artists in the last few years, but do you find that a lot of the new stuff is redundant, same
sound over and over with not a lot of originality? I don't like the fact that a lot of performers "eat the mike" and you can't understand the words. Even my 17 yr old grandaughter says, "what good are they if you can't understand the words so you can sing along?," so I don't think it is just my aging ears. What new rock songs or artists that you really like? Do you think American Idol is a good thing, are are we getting really good performers or are we getting "manufactured" artists?

I've noticed when I (or other people) sometimes give answers or ask questions that are not "expected" for a gay guy to give, people assume I'm straight and give me thumbs down, but if I add an edit saying I'm gay, they start to give me thumbs up. Is there a little bit of a "us versus them" mentality going on here?

Similarly, I notice atheists who seem to side with Christians or vice versa on some topics and state their denomination afterwards tend to get mixed reviews before and after they add if they are atheist or Christian.

An irishman now living in Wales had a car accident and in the heat of the moment called the other driver, a Welsh woman, an English b*tch.

I realise the word 'b*tch' was offensive but the man was tried and found guilty of racism. That I do not understand because as far as I am aware Irish, English and Welsh are of the same race.

So how is that racism?

onability?I have seen people given good paying jobs(both white, black, hispanic & asian) but they just seem to stay in trouble continually. Many of these people just blame their problems on others. When i tell them they need to stayaway from these people who influence them to do wrong its like it goes in one ear & out the other one.I'm trying to be honest with them & i get the feeling they think i'm blameing them but i'm not.I just want to help if i can but they act like they dont even want my help is this in their genes or what?

Romans 1:
24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

1 Corinthians 6:9
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders

While we're all supposed to be tiptoeing around trying not to offend anybody, it's forcing us to treat people differently on the basis of their race or culture - which is exactly what we're not meant to do.

My son, in his last year of primary, will not be taking part in a nativity play this year because it's not considered "inclusive". This really makes me cross.

Quite a few years ago I spent Christmas in Kuwait - which, quite obviously does not celebrate it. In spite of this though, the main shopping centre had some (limited) decorations, and all the Kuwaiti nationals graciously wished us Happy Christmas and were interested to see how we celebrated it.

At no time was there the merest hint that we were disrespecting them by having celebrations in their own country - they looked on with a kind of amused indulgence. Yet we're supposed to believe that anyone from a different religion would be devastated at us celebrating our own festival in our own country.

Utter bollocks.

I am seeing five gentlemen every day.

As soon as I wake up, Will Power helps me get out of bed.

Then I go to see John.

Then Charlie Horse comes along. And when he is here he takes a lot of my time and attention.

When he leaves, Art Ritis shows up and stays the rest of the day. He doesn't like to stay in one place very long, so he takes me from joint to joint.

After such a busy day, I'm really tired and glad to go to bed with Ben Gay.
