You mean there isn't any virtue in resisting the ugly and cumbersome burdens of rationality and objectivity?
I think there is a good bit of the "us v. them" mentality at play. I would say that this is partially as a result of the somewhat antagonistic subculture that has developed out of not being accepted into the culture at large.
If a question or answer raises my hackles, I try to look at the motivations behind it. If, in addition to ignorance, there is malice and hostility, then I have no problem tearing into the person (with wit, of course). I rarely give thumbs down, except for in the case of that hideous Terrell guy (the one who phrases his questions as if he is moderating a talk show). I give him a thumbs down or a scathing rebuke every chance I get.

Whether it is an "us against them" mentality or not is a possibility, but I don't think so. If I were gay and gave an answer that sounds straight I would expect to get thumbs downs from those who might disagree with me.
If I gave you a thumbs down for an answer to a homosexual question I wouldn't feel the need to take back my thumbs down just because you tell me you are gay. I give thumbs down for content not for how I perceive the person to be.

I think that you are correct in thinking that someone perceived as being straight (whether they are or not) are judged more harshly.
I have seen this happen in both my responses and a couple of the questions I have asked. I have also noticed it by reading other comments although I am not going to judge whether or not someone is gay, bi, straight based on a yahoo comment.
I think making such assumptions makes it harder for the asker to get an honest answer and honest reaction from others.

I think to some element you may be on to something, however, you also deal with in the gay community, gay haters, who hate themselves and the community as a whole generally shuns them too.
I am atheist, however, there ARE some things I agree with, with SOME Christians (the ones that can think for themselves and are true Christians).
Being gay is something we ALL have in common, but we all have different character traits, morals etc..

I probably get annoyed with straight people who act like they know what being gay is all about, or who seem to think that being straight gives them special knowledge and insight about being gay that we gays ourselves lack, despite the fact that we actually live the life while they only read about it.

Only if I think their criticism is coming from bigotry or fear or ignorance. I suspect I am more prejudiced against Xians than I am against straight people, but only because I know many more straight people than I know Xians.

yes i do. but it also depends on the comment. sometimes there are comments made that seem to be anti-gay, but in reality are anti-bad taste and class....if you know what I mean.
