I would like to know why every one talks about prayer in school. I am 44 years old and do not remember a time when there was prayer in school.

My family is spread out throughout the western US and we aren't able to spend Christmas together (I am talking me and my 4 siblings not my children) I got this idea today to help us to "share" in the holiday spirit. I presented it to them today and so far almost all have chosen to participate.(there are 40 of us total) We do not exchange gifts amongst ourself so to draw us together I suggested that each year we choose a charity and donate together as a family. Each person over 18, couple, or family is free to donate any amount they choose-I promised not to blab who contributes what. We are pooling our money and donating it together to a charity I selected. In the future we will select the charity together but it was late this year. I so far have pledges from $2 to $200. Just thought I would pass this on. it is helping us to feel more in the Christmas spirit. How about you? Does your family do anything as a family to enhance the season?

I need to find a good passage to read in a short service this weekend. I would like something that relates to confidence, peace, or wisdom/knowledge. Something uplifting, and less than about 10 verses. I know it's a lot to ask, but any thoughts?

I am in college and I work but my mom still pays a majority of my expenses. I want to get her something nice for Christmas but it feels silly buying her something with money she gave me. Last year I made her cookies and it seemed to go over well but I don't want to do the same thing again. Anyone have a suggestion for me?

I'm an atheist and I've heard from various people who didn't know where I stand that "atheists are immoral" and "atheists are amoral."

My question is this: How do you view yourself vis-a-vis religious people (regardless of their faith) when it comes to morality?

Have you encountered the same kinds of stereotypical arguments and if so, how do you deal with them?

Does it make you angry or are you okay ignoring them? Do you argue and/or challenge the statements?

I've recently heard that there are about 15 groups of people that Christians should pray for according to the Bible. I'd like to know who they are. I know we should pray for our Pastor, political leaders, policemen, laborers, enemies etc.
Please include scripture references also please. Thank you.

I have a big issue I am searching for an answer about, and I feel led to fast and pray tomorrow. I have never fasted before and I was wondering if anyone could help me understand the proper way to do so. I have heard there are various levels of fasting, looking forward to the answers.

I genuinely do...I'll tell you why...people have always had religions..different religions..over the millenia..and they believed in their God and their rituals..
It just strikes me that a whole lot of people are spending a lot of effort on rituals...and we all cant be right...the seik not cutting their hair ...and the muslim praying 5 times a day..and the jew being circumcised..the catholic not using contraception..etc etc..you get my point..
religion just seems to fill a social need...I'm not talking about God here guys...just religion..if you can seperate the two in your mind?

An old man decided his old wife was getting hard of hearing. So he called her doctor to make an appointment to have her hearing checked.
The Doctor said he could see her in two weeks, and meanwhile there's a simple, informal test the husband could do to give the doctor some idea of the dimensions of the problem.

"Here's what you do. Start about 40 feet away from her, and speak in a normal conversational tone and see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response."

So that evening she's in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he's in the living room, and he says to himself, "I'm about 40 feet away, let's see what happens."

"Honey, what's for supper?" No response.

So he moves to the other end of the room, about 30 feet away. "Honey, what's for supper?" No response.

So he moves into the dining room, about 20 feet away. "Honey, what's for supper?" No response.

On to the kitchen door, only 10 feet away. "Honey, what's for supper?". No response.

So he walks right up behind her. "Honey, what's for supper?"

"For the FIFTH time, CHICKEN!!!!"

. . . your personal moral code is at least loosely based on a theocratic code of some kind, whether Judeo-Christian or not? Whether intentionally or not?

Just curious, not picking a fight.

Thanks all!

I'm looking for the classics, NOT hymns or origional songs (like Merry X-Mass War is Over, Santa Baby or Feliz Navidad), not that I don't like those kinds of songs, I'm just looking for clean, pure, origional classic christmas songs. Things like Winter Wonderland, Jingle Bells, Let it Snow, Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Can you think of some others? (The one that's most lengthiest and thourough will get the 10 points here!) Thanks!

like they show on the travel shows where they travel to spooky places where there are lost spirits, and other such stuff. Or are the people acting? Or are they really seeing stuff?
like gettysburg, or other places where some supernatural stuff was claimed to have taken place.
