my neighbors all brought small gifts for the holidays. I'm broke. What do I do?

we're new to the neighborhood and it is a HIGHLY social neighborhood. we all have kids who play together. i'm looking for work but until i find it, things are tight... i'm embarassed.

A bring-your-own-meat barbecue for Christmas Eve?

I am really struggling with this one. I just found out, yesterday, that the relative who is insisting on hosting our traditional Christmas Eve has ordered everyone to bring their own meats for a barbecue! I'm already done shopping. I expected the hosting to be gracious and hospitable, like I and other are when we host. My husband and I feel really weird about this; there will undoubtedly be a variety of each-his-own fare, which striked me as potentially-uncomfortable. We feel like the menu is a message that it's all an inconvenience (and there's a history of the hostess being a self-centered beotch). We're thinking of declining to send the message with our actions, but it would hurt some feelings. Is this just me overly-projecting my opinions and wishes, or would you feel the same way? Any ideas on how to handle it?

Why Do People Take A Few Bad Seeds And Justify It As Actions of An Entire Religion?

for example, atheists say religion kills. muslims hijack some planes and they think Allah condones killing. Christian extremists bomb abortion clinics, God condones the bombing. Or if a Hindu burns is wife in the back yard, the Hindu Gods condone it. This is not normal behavior...I dont kill and never would. Do they not understand that "religious" people who are intent with murder hate and misery are evil and do not represent their faith? It is almost as if they are passing judgement on everyone else of the religion. These militants are giving their religion a bad name and need to be locked away in asylum away from the public especially little children.

does anyone know where i could find a store or shop for Habaias(i hope i spell it correctly) and scarves? My sister over in germany recently converted to the islamic religion and i want to make her a present of it since she has not been able to find nice ones in germany. Atheism: Can we have some proper definitions please?

I'm also assuming many will give me tailored definitions of what atheism means. Atheism attempts to describe a lack of belief in a deity, multiple deities, gods, a sumpreme being, etc. We don't have words for people who do not believe in unicorns (An-unicornism?), but because most of the world is religious, we have to apply a name to these people who just don't believe. Saying, "I believe there is NO god" is a positive atheistic belief. However, saying, "I don't believe in a god" is atheism, although it is NOT a belief, per se. Not believing is not the same as believing there is not something. Atheism is NOT a belief system. By definition, infants, people who have severe mental retardation, and people not aware of a god are all atheists. It's not surprising that irrational, exclusive connotations would come from theists about this.

Has society advanced for the better?

I was reading about the the murder of the Amish girls, and was amazed at the forgiveness and acceptance the Amish people demonstrated. And how "modern" people rarely ever demonstrate that anymore.

It makes me rethink the changes most of society has gone through. Modernization has brought on many new schools of thought (various liberalizations, secularisation, and shifts of moral priorities, etc), which at the time seemed to be a forward progression in society. But ultimately, have we really advanced for the better?

Do you think that Santa is necessary for Children......I think that the whole santa thing is stupid?

I received a gift bag with someone else's name on it!?

Last week my friend gave me a gift. Earlier in the week I was joking around saying nobody gets me anything, especially for my birthday since it's in the summer. When she gave me the gift, she mentioned how she felt bad. It was a bottle of shimmer lotion. Later on, I was looking at the bag, and the tag on it said another name. Should I mention this to my friend, or just let it go?

Smoking in public places?

Hi,
Does all this mean that next July I can't smoke my pipe in the recreation feild? It is, after all, a public place.
I am going daft, or is it "the system" ?
Totally Bonkers in my opinion.
I would not smoke in the same room as my family, but have I got to now stand in the middle of a remote feild to indulge ?
Oh I know - I shall take my boat well out to sea, in order to light up a crafty pipe of baccy.
Yes, I know that smoking is bad, but please !
