I was reading about the the murder of the Amish girls, and was amazed at the forgiveness and acceptance the Amish people demonstrated. And how "modern" people rarely ever demonstrate that anymore.

It makes me rethink the changes most of society has gone through. Modernization has brought on many new schools of thought (various liberalizations, secularisation, and shifts of moral priorities, etc), which at the time seemed to be a forward progression in society. But ultimately, have we really advanced for the better?

While it is true that our modern society has evolved into a more complex system, I do not agree that there is anything inherently progressive. That is to say, I do not consider changes in our society from less to more complex to be progressive by definition. Both more and less complex can be viewed as progress, depending on the specific goal.

Comparing our more complex social structure to the less complex social structure of the Amish, we find both advantages and disadvantages in both. To really discover which functions better, we need to study the results of each. Which has a higher standard of living? Longer life span? Higher crime rate? Happier people? Better education? Social security? Liberties?

Yes! But it's taking a long time to notice. For example:

Witches are no longer burned. There's no more slavery. Women have advanced up the social ladder. Most of south American countries are more democratic than they were in the 1970s.

those AMISH people put JESUS CHRIST first and they obey his rules! If we as Americans did the same thing, we would be a much better Country than we think we are.
Blacks would forgive whites for the past, and whites would not stereotype blacks like they so often do.
AND DO YOU EVER NOTICE THAT IS ONLY THE BLACKS AND WHITES HATING ON EACH OTHER.
NO OTHER RACE.

Killing the murderer is not going to bring back their children. The Amish are pragmatic. Why waste your time trying to control something you cannot.

I will believe that we have "advanced" when support for wars ends. Until then, I don't believe it.
