if the government really wanted to do away with cigarettes and make the nation healthy, why dont they just ban them altogether?
i will tell you why
the money the treasury gets from tobacco taxes, keeps the nhs going,
over 40billion pounds a year go into the government kitty
and what would they do then?
so this half hearted attempt to look like they are trying to outlaw tobacco is just laughable
i smoke and its my choice to smoke, and whilst i agree in not smoking in restarants or other eating establishments, it is my human rights to smoke and i will and only i will decide when i will give up smoking

While I recognize the unfairness to smokers, I must say as an asthmatic and a non-smoker that I support the ban in SOME public places. I'm from the US (don't know if you're talking about the UK), so here one cannot smoke in restaurants, in some bars at the discretion of the owner, and within 20ft of a public building. I personally find it reasonable. While I understand it's an addiction, I feel that the more limitations placed on smokers the better. It's like letting an alcoholic drink and be rowdy wherever they are, they'll obviously bother someone with their addiction as they will effect others around them. Smoking is becoming more taboo because people are bothered by it. Frankly it stinks and it's an extremely unattractive and unhealthy habit. The more lives we can save by banning it the better. Lung cancer is a terrible thing to live through as it oral cancer, emphasema, and chronic bronchitis. I've watched relatives suffer through the adverse effects of smoking and it's unneccessary to die before your time just for a silly ciggarette.

I don't know where you are, but there are various smoking bans all across the US. Restrictions vary from state to state.
Most often, you are forbidden from smoking in public areas of commercial businesses (ie bars, stores, theaters, etc) and in governmental offices (ie airports, schools, city hall, etc). Some states go further and say that you cannot smoke within 15-20 feet of a doorway. Some states are now trying to enact smoking bans in public parks; beaches have already had smoking banned in California. I recently read of an attempt to ban smoking in cars where there are children present.
And by the way, most places in the US that still permit smoking don't allow pipes or cigars to be lit up due to the strong aromas.

smoking in public places has been banned in scotland since march now,i assume the rules will be similar. You can still smoke out in the open,i think any place with cover exceeding 50 % is classed as indoors therfore is banned this includes bus shelters by the way! So you will be ok to spark up your pipe on the rec. and any other wide open space! Happy puffin Bob

My understanding is that the ban affects all enclosed public places. So any building to which the public have access will be affected but not open spaces.
It is a case of 'watch this space' though, like many government actions, it is a rather wooly piece of legislation and is bound to be interpreted in several ways!
I wouldn't cast off just yet Bob, you may find that your smoking habits won't have to change much at all!!

I dont smoke.. i dont mind people that do smoke but sometimes i just dont want to smell it. it just gets in my throught and it bothers me.. i dont want to be nasty and just tell you to put that cig away, what i try to do is walk away. noe there are people that are nasty and will make faces and tell you to put it away. i think the goverment is doing this so ppl will stop smoking because they are going to run out of spaces to do it.. which i think its nonesense. its like telling an obese person not to eat Mcdonalds. now all these crazy laws are just crazy.. i mean smoking is just as bad as eating burgers and fries at Mcdonalds and no one tells obese ppl to eat indoors. and i dont see "truth" saying to stop eating because poeple die from diabetes. all i say is take the non smokers into consideration. ask the person u are stading beside if the smoke bothers them before u do it.. if it does then say.. well im going to light my cig i think you might wanna step further for 3 mins.. or move yourself. AND SMOKING IS BAD FOR YOU!

Don't be silly, if anything, the restrictions will help you cut down and then when you find a quiet place you can really enjoy your smoke. For in-between cravings, buy some nicorettes, like me!

I think this just includes inside areas and excludes bars. You shouldnt smoke inside anyways because its not fair to hurt other peoples health. But yeh, Im pretty sure you just have to be 30 feet away from a public building.
