I'm not putting down what any of you believe in, but i just don't see the point of religion in a modern world.

Take the Bible for instance:
Can anybody seriously believe in a world created in 6 days; the garden of eden; man created in gods' image; etc.

Hasn't science disproved all these theories now. Evolution; Big Bang; Expanding Universe.

We know that LONG before man walked the earth there were other creatures / things living here. So in one fell swoop 'Bang' goes the whole: 6 Day / Eden / Gods Image, thing.

Can we please stop killing each other because of a difference of opinion about a subject based in fiction and missplaced dreams.

There was also that time that Albert Einstein proved to me that god exist because of smiling babies. And that Marine who tried to beat me up to prove there is a god.

Hooray for theist urban legends.

ok,, before you answer, please read everything that i've written. i have a very specific question and i don't want to waste your time or mine by having you answer a question that i didn't ask.

assuming that a person can even choose their beliefs, why should i go with jesus?

please don't answer with, because he's lord. whether or not he's lord is precisely what's in question here, so you can't really base your conclusion on it. you follow? i need you to demonstrate WHY he's lord.

you're probably gonna say, "well, i can't show you. you just have to have faith." --- ok,,, but here's the thing,,, why should i have faith... IN JESUS? --- i can have faith in vishnu or zeus. in fact, you can blindly believe in ANYTHING. so why jesus?

a common response to this is, "well,,, if atheism is true, then it doesn't hurt to be a christian. but if christianity is true, then it DOES hurt to be an theist". but what if islam is true?

i'm running out of room here. please read the additional details.

If you REALLY think about it...

A marriage is a religious insitution. You get married at a chuch (mostly) by a Pastor, Priest, or Minister, according to the denomination of the church... and the clergymen who perform these marriage services in their churches have to be licensed by the state they live in for it to be a legally binding marriage.

Since traditional times, we have always honored the traditional nuclear family as being the ideal way to raise children, live as an adult, etc... and this is partly because it was the only way we could survive and partly because the church discouraged doing anything else with your life OTHER than raising a family at some point. The idea of marriage (you bible thumpers probably know the verses and exacts better than I do) is an exclusively religious idea in which two people take oaths to care for and be faithful to one another and stake their honor on it, whether it is Judaic or Islamic or Catholic or Christian....

I am a Christian but would like to hear SCHOLASTIC (faith through logical reasoning) why, it is logical for your Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Shinto (etc.) beliefs. Only through reason please. I would prefer no lectures or dogmatic ranting (not to be rude or disrespectful). Atheists and blind believers (I understand that faith is mostly blind :) ) please do not respond please because (again not to be rude) but often your views are more ignorant or absolute than educated and open-minded.

I keep hearing that you just have to have faith if you want something to come true.

I tend to think most people are born "evil" (i.e. they do what the must to survive, regardless of others) and society teaches us to be good. Many people would disagree with this. What do you think?
