I'm not putting down what any of you believe in, but i just don't see the point of religion in a modern world.
Take the Bible for instance:
Can anybody seriously believe in a world created in 6 days; the garden of eden; man created in gods' image; etc.
Hasn't science disproved all these theories now. Evolution; Big Bang; Expanding Universe.
We know that LONG before man walked the earth there were other creatures / things living here. So in one fell swoop 'Bang' goes the whole: 6 Day / Eden / Gods Image, thing.
Can we please stop killing each other because of a difference of opinion about a subject based in fiction and missplaced dreams.

Wow, so many views...... this is great.
I'm even more confused now though... If most people accept that the "truth" and "faith" are two different things, are they not living a lie.
Surely blind faith in something that has no founding in fact, no proof of existance, no historical basis ..... it's just fooling yourself into feeling better (what might be, maybe).
Trillo333: The point is, if Jesus and Christ are mythical (stories told told in the village to create good feeling and hope) your point is lost.
Zander: Yes, I am doubting. There is no basis of factual evidence that either existed. Only a storyline written and adapted time and again many years after the fact.
Dont get me wrong, i'd be delighted if there was a single scrap of proof; i just dont see anything.
Seems to be a story based message of hope "things will get better" for the masses. With all the alleged wonderous events, why are none recoreded in history?
Believe for life, and if we're wrong - OOPS.

If you have a definite answer to the point of life then please let's here it - Don't give us all that mumbo jumbo about big bang, evolution when all these are is some half baked speculation without any solid proof.
Science hasn't disproved anything - if it has done anything then it has proved how greedy people are that they'll jump at anything which will give them power and control.
Do you really think that God cannot accomplish anything even within the blink of an eye let alone 6 days?
Do you really understand why wars are fought? They are fought for one reason and one reason only - for one to gain power and control over another, e.g. to control water, land, resources etc. Some merely use God as a convenient excuse for their actions. The show-bottle christians for a long time used God as an excuse to invade lands and wipe out hundreds of ancient cultures - but was it for God or was it to gain more control, land and ultimately money?
Please explain why the US, UK and NATO predominantly invade the middle east countries and not those in Africa. A lot of African countries suffer under the same despotic leadership as Iraq or Afghanistan. How much of Christianity do you think George W Bush is actually following?
There is more killing of animals then humans - and why is this - because animals are meek and can't fight back? Because humans somehow think that they are the only intelligent creatures around? Can we stop the senseless killing of animals due to gross ignorance? Science has proved that humans can live healthy lives without meat so why all the animal killing for quick snacks?
It would be foolish to think that anyone could even begin to comprehend God when such gross ignorance is peddled in the name of science.

Science has actually been confirming the Bible and disproving Evolution. Evolution is an impossibility!
As for the 6 day account for creation!? Who knows for sure. It was stated that a day could be 8 or 24 hours, could mean 1 thousand years and or it could have been referred to as, for example back in my day, it is not clearly defined.
The Big Bang was actually the start of the fall of Evolution...it shows that we had a beginning which showed there was a cause for this beginning and the cause has been stated as a Creator. It also laid out the exact order in the beginning of the universe which is stated correctly in the Bible which was written 3,500 years ago, Mose's could not have guessed this correctly.
Einstein has a great quote which is ..."A legitimate conflict between science and religion cannot exist. Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind". And he also stated that he looked forward to meeting the mind behind our universe +/-.
Nothing personal but Einstein has looked into this fiction and misplaced dream thing of yours a bit more than you have and I'll go with the brain on this one!

Religion is the reason there is killing going on in the middle east. People have great religion but are denying the power there of. When people finally get tired of running out things to fill up there empty lives and begin to allow for Christ to live in thier hearts there will be no more blood shed.
Evolution which has no evidence as much as Creation is a faith just like all other beliefs. People believe that the world was made out of a big bang. Do they know for a fact that this is the way it happened. No!!!

Religion is man's greatest experiment in social engineering. Basically it was invented; yes invented.., to keep people in line in a time before trained police really existed. It worked marvelously. The priests stayed in power for a long time, even up to present day. I am constantly amazed that otherwise intelligent people fall for it. It is so ingrained into children almost from birth that it self perpetuates. They have a great way of explaining all of the scientific facts collected that disproves the various belief structures. They either deny it and say the devil or (inset name of favorite deity here) created some kind of mass illusion or something such. They also say" (Insert name of favorite deity here again) works in mysterious ways. I guiess my biggest problem with most modern religions is that the entire belief system of most of them are based on extortion. If I walked up to someone and said I was going to take them and send them to the most rotten place in the universe unless they did exactly what I said, I would be sent to prison for extortion, yet this is pretty much the philosophy of most modern religions. I will not even go into some of the more extremist religions of the middle east. Maybe some day humanity will collectively grow up and stop believing this stuff. Not likely but maybe.

Evolution is also another form of religion that you seem to accept as fact.
Theories are not fact just some else's point of view.
There are answers out there but sometimes you may have to put a little time into something to truly find the answers for yourself.
God will only be as big as you will let Him be in your life-something or nothing it's up to you.
Good question though.

The point of religion I don't get but faith is a different matter and truth is a different matter too. There is no proof of evolution or the big bang but hey if you start off with the assumption there's no creator God, you have to come up with something else. It doesn't even matter in the final analysis. All that matters is whether or not the outrageous claims of Jesus are true or false. If they are true then we should take them very seriously indeed. If they are false then what does anything else matter? I would maybe have agreed with you before Jesus Himself showed me how wrong I was, how much He loves me, and how much I need Him. Let me just state again that it was Jesus Himself, not any human or book, that opened my eyes. Please don't close your mind to the possibility that there is a loving God waiting to pour love onto you, and why not ask Him to reveal Himself to you and see what happens?

Religion was invented by men to keep control.
Faith, is a very personal thing entirely, just between ourselves and God.
Whilst I am a Christian and follow Jesus Christ, I do so in the same vein that He lived, out here amongst the people and not inside a building.
True Christians do not go to war, or kill. We love our fellow man, we cannot judge him either, God alone does this.
Just because someone flies your countries flag, it doesn't necessarily make them a patriot, they could have ulterior motives of their own! What better way to get inside and cause the maximum amount of damage, than to wear the badge?
So it is, with some who call themselves Christians, but then go on to use Christ's name, to go on the attack.
I can assure you, whilst it grieves true Christians to see and hear these happenings in God's name, it does not change the faith we share.
"Follow me and you will be persecuted for my sake" and trust me my friend, we are!
We took it on when we accepted Jesus as our Saviour, so we must take the criticism and the brickbats.
We do not however, accept the blame for all these 'false Christians' though.
Like credit card/identity fraud, many innocent people suffer sometimes, it aint their fault though, that someone nicked their Monica, and went out on the rampage in their name, is it?
God Bless:-)

Religion makes people FEEL better about themselves if their religion is shallow enough that it does not ask too much of them. It does matter what religion it is, it all has the same purpose: follow our rules and you will have favor with God and get into heaven
Funny thing is the fact that each one claims THEY HAVE THE TRUTH but their truth is different from the other one that has the truth?????????? I guess you can pick which ever truth you want to believe and can be happy with it because there are other people there that have accepted the same "truth"
However, there is a BIG DIFFERENCE between being religious and having a relationship with God Himself.
Religion is man's way to get to God.
God has a way for us to get to Him that is beyond religion - and it is way too awesome to explain with human words. I could talk all day long but can never convey how awesome it is. You gotta know Him yourself before you can be able to understand.

Religion has long been known to be a pack of lies, but 'faith' continues to guide people into a fictional, fantasy world where you only need to believe a lie for it to be perfectly reasonable. This is the driving force behind wars.
Religion should be banned.. there is no place for it in a modern, intelligent society where people strive to learn the truth about our origins, rather than writing stories to fill in the gaps.
Over the centuries, people have gotten just a little too used to taking these stories literally. One day someone will be trying to find Humpty Dumpty in the classifieds.

Of course there is a point to religon. Religion provides a doctrine to live by. The Bible, for instance, isn't just a story. It contains parables that translate into our everyday lives, helping Christians make decisions and ascertain their situations in life. You initially asked whether there is a point to religion, then proceed to ask whether anyone can seriously believe creation to be a fact. Let's say The Bible isn't fact, but entirely fiction. If the fictional character Jesus inspires the reader to be a better person, then there is a point to religion, regardless.
