I know what you are talking about. It degrades the people who are trying to speak English. It makes them less confident of themselves and then they make more mistakes.

Dear coffee: In order for people to understand each other all the time, there has to be a standard of use in the language. That standard is grammar. Good grammar shows not only that you actually attended school and passed your courses, but also your level of intelligence. For the most part people do not mean to ridicule you, they are simply expressing frustration at not being able to understand you and they are also giving you a hint of how the rest of the world sees you. Besides, people who use good grammar usually make much better money, live in much better neighborhoods, and have a much higher place in society. Now, the question is, how do you want to live your life? If you want the "good" life, then make the effort in all things and blame no one for your failures. The trick is to stand up once you fall and continue. You are worth it! Get with the program and be free to live well. The rich are that way because they work hard. How about it?
Mr. M on grammar.

I think it's just that when you meet new people it's easier and everyone is more comfortable when we all speak English the same way (or pretty close to the same). It makes it easier for everyone to get along. I suppose that's why a "right way" to speak English happened in the first place. For a long time before that, though, there was no "right" way to spell words or use them. That changed over the years so that people could understand each other better, which made for a stronger community of English-speakers.

Improper grammar and spelling shows that the person doesn't pay attention to detail or is uneducated as to the proper spelling and grammar. You have to infer emotion during written communication. If your grammar and spelling are inaccurate, I would infer that you were in a hurry and maybe, therefore, a little irrational or emotional. If a missing or missplaced comma changes the sentence so that it does not match your intention, then you are not able to communicate your thoughts and ideas to others.

By the way, if someone doesn't know the difference between their, there and they're, are you going to trust their knowledge on more difficult matters? I wouldn't want a doctor to perform surgery on me if they couldn't master simpler tasks throughout life.

My favorite is when someone calls someone else a dumba$$ for improper grammar and their comment includes a grammatical error! Most people are not aware of their own ignorance.

I think that these guys who have English as their second language should be given some slack. Let me see, us, native English speakers learn how to write and speak another language and not mess up our grammar or our spelling. So maybe some people are better at expressing themselves in English, they may sound more educated but that does not mean that they are. My point being is that I encourage the native English speakers to walk in the shoes of the people who have English as their second language and find out for ourselves how difficult it is to master another language. I have read most of the answers to this question and I'm appalled at the responses! Some are ridiculing the people who make mistakes in grammar while they themselves commit these errors!

I totally agree with u people can get down right rude about it you see I have a learning disablity and while I spell words the best i know how and people instead of helping me rather put me down make fun of me and things like that it is not my fault I am not the best speller in the world and if i could change it I would these people think that making fun of some one cause of there spelling or the way they say some is funny when the other reason they do this is cause they are not happy and decidced to take it out on others to make them selfs feel better

Most often, one or two or even three grammar/spelling/typo mistakes don't illicit a response. It's when the entire question is a heap of horribly messed-up words that don't even exist, with hardly ANY words spelled correctly, NO grammar and no punctuation. That's when we feel the need to come and point out to the poster that he needs work. The English language is a beautiful thing when used correctly. It's communication at it's finest and our abilities with it are declining over time because few people care, apparently...

Um.. you are getting over sensitive. Sounds to me like you wanted an arguement, not an answer. I think grammar is a big deal when I see people who write "kewl" instead of "cool" and try to type in slang, use past and present in the same sentance, etc. I am sure there may be people here who may not speak English primarily and I am sure this is an excellent outlet for them to test their knowledge and gain some as well. But I think that for the Americans, (and its pretty easy to determine who they are) it is laziness. If you cannot type properly or choose not to I am unsure what that says about the state of our culture and education.

Speaking one's native language properly is a sign of a good education. Since English is a very complex language, people for whom English is not a native language have an excuse not to be fully fluent and comfortable in its usage. I think that if English is the only language you speak, however, you could at least make an effort to speak it properly to avoid miscommunicating with others. (I personally had to read your question a few times to actually understand what you were trying to ask.) Afterall, what is the point of doing something half-assed if you're capable of doing it at least reasonably well?

Well Mr Coffee-infus, it seems that you might of had a few too many cups of java, for you are getting upset over people asking that you do the correct thing. I certainly am glad that you can understand all of the questions for that shows me the level of education that you have attained. I especially like your use of cursing and abbreviations in your descriptions. I suppose that you agree that people who make mistakes constantly are okay, how about people who run red lights mistakenly, forget to stop at stop signs by mistake, or maybe shoplift by mistake. You start compounding the little errors and they become big ones, you should start to demand that people be correct in what they do, it will make for a better person and a better you.

how you type is very closely associated with how you speak. people learning english as a second language will often type out words they way they pronounce it. by using bad grammar here or misspelling words, it makes you look like an moron who sits at the computer all day long, eating Cheetos when you're not playing Dungeons and Dragons with your imaginary friends. occasional typos are okay but shorthand typing and completely incoherent questions aggravate people, myself included. if you don't care how you present yourself then be prepared for stupid answers.
