Greed will trigger 'ecosystem collapse'

Tuesday 24 October 2006, 16:15 Makka Time, 13:15 GMT

A large-scale ecosystem collapse within 50 years is likely if current global consumption levels are not cut by half, an environmental group has warned.

The WWF's Living Planet Report, published every other year, said the natural world was being degraded "at a rate unprecedented in human history".

The report, released on Tuesday, showed relentless growth in demand on the earth's capacity to produce clean air, and to provide raw materials, food and energy.

James Leape, WWF's director-general, said: "We are in serious ecological overshoot, consuming resources faster than the earth can replace them. The consequences of this are predictable and dire.

"The cities, power plants and homes we build today will either lock society into damaging over-consumption beyond our lifetimes, or begin to propel this and future generations towards sustainable living."

Energy consumption

Two years ago, the same report based on 2001 data said the world's population was already outstripping the earth's capacity to regenerate resources by just over 20 per cent.

The 2006 edition of the WWF report said that figure had risen to 25 per cent in 2003.

The WWF said carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption were the fastest growing component of the index in that period, increasing more than ninefold.

A survey of animal life from 1970 to 2003 found that terrestrial species had declined by 31 per cent, freshwater species by 28 per cent and marine species by 27 per cent.

The WWF estimated that even a rapid reversal in consumption habits now would only bring the world back to 1980s levels, when it was already over-consuming, by 2040.

I would NEVER think about acting on any of these dreams, but it freaks me out that I have dreamt about him twice now...and yes, they are sort of sexual dreams. Does this make me a pervert?? Should I talk to someone about this???

As an attorney I shared with several of my "Liberal" colleagues at a meeting things the GOP has done that are 100% beneficial to them!

Yet NONE could respond rationlly without a deluge of insults, irrational blather and just plain old hate!

What is it with the Far Left Wing ACLU Adoring Liberal Democrats?

It's just, "Hate Bush"...and that's not good for attorney's ...
We are supposed to deal with "Reason" and he "Facts" ..Helloooo?

Reason: The economy is kicking butt. It is robust, vibrant, strong and growing. In the 36 months since the Bush tax cuts ended the recession that began under President Clinton, the economy has experienced astonishing growth.

Reason: Unemployment is almost nil for a major economy, and is verging on full employment.

Reason: The Dow is hitting record highs. In the past few days, the Dow climbed above 12,000 for the first time in the history of the stock market, thus increasing the value of 401ks

Reason: No Terroist acts on USA soil

What if there are forces that we can imagine helping us from heaven and interlaced diminsions between there and here that can work for or against our survival? What if our illusion about how life works and what is to be held eternally responsible is partially created by ourselves along with other living forces including invisible ones? Is it possible that the images of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and Unicorns exist even right now but you can't see them and they can help you? Can imaginary wolves eat cancer cells? Can imaginary fairies change the cancer into good cells? What if an idol is predestined to comfort you into healing in this life?

force yourself to fall out of love?

I've been talking to this guy (online) who lives on the other side of the country. Every time we talk, I get giddy and shaky and nervous and happy and all that other chemical crap. It's so ridiculous, since I know it doesn't make any sense. I also know he doesn't feel the same about me -- he also talks to this other girl. How can I make myself not feel this way??

I walked in there and they were pressuring me, like they had things to do, but I got up and chickened out.
I don't think I could go through with it.
But I don't know what to do or if I'm ready to be a parent.
Did I make the right choice?
Would they schedule me a new appointment or be mad at me for running out?

I am 16yrs male, I have friends and stuff and everything seems ok. I don't do drugs and I have a normal middle class life and there's nothing that bad besides just always the occasional complain about grades and school.
So with all that inmind- my problem is when i'm usually by myself I'll randomly just be hit by a train of frustration and just feel mad for some reason (basicly feel like life just sucks) and this is a recurring problem.

And I try to control it by just counting to 10 or thinking otherwise but it usually enduces the problem and makes it worst. Mostly I just feel enraged emotion/anger and I really want to know what it is.. again there's really nothing that I know of at that moment that is inflicting me to become depressed. So, if I got a better idea of what it may be, ex;maybe normal or just me or something's wrong. That'd be better, so I can possibly just control it. :)

Thanks for your help and time. :)
