The reliability of polygraph tests has been severely criticised, I believe by the British Psychological Society amongst others. This is one reason they are little used in the United Kingdom. They continue to be used in the United States because they appear scientific and, I suspect, for commercial reasons.

I think there have been psychological papers on trying to decive polygraph tests, but I don't know the details. "Lie detector" tests purport to work by measuring differences in the electical resistance of the skin, and in principle somebody who is confident as he or she lies will presumably not generate such changes. However, we lack voluntary control over relevant functions such as sweating.

If I'm being deceptive, it would have no bearing on whether you pass your polygraph test or not. It measures your reactions to the questions, so a calm person stands a better chance of getting through a lie stands a better chance than a nervous one.

What an odd question.

If I am being deceptive, but YOU are taking the polygraph test, you should pass with flying colors.

The polygraph measures heartbeat, right? Well, it is possible to become an "experienced liar" and learn to control your heartbeat and other automatic responses when you lie (like sweating), and thereby beating the polygraph.

Btw, a more effective way to find liars is to find this machine that measures the contractions of your stomach. You know that funny feeling you get in your stomach when you lie? There's some machine that can monitor that movement somewhere in your digestive system, and when people lie, it marks it down as showing excessive movement in that area.

Generally the only way that you can beat a polygraph is if you truly believe what you're saying - so either you need to be honest, or you have to be suffering from some sort of mental defect that allows you to believe your own lies.

Try to relax all your muscles beforehand. As the interviewer starts to ask the question, tense up your abdominal muscles as hard as you can because the polygraph detects rapid twitches in these muscles: if they're already contracted then they can't do this.

Working out random, and really hard sums in your head will distract yourself, and is reckoned to be the best method.

The KGB advised its agents to just relax.

i does not believe any organisation stupid adequate to position self assurance in a polygraph. in spite of the indisputable fact that, the necessary trick (in case you at the instantaneous are not a sociopath - in which case passing is a cakewalk), is to advance your vitals contained in the 'administration' questions, then loosen up contained in the others and enable it stability out. in case you at the instantaneous are not good on biofeedback, evaluate something truly distressing, and picture about it even as they ask difficulty-free information which incorporates your call. For something of the questions, ease up. also, the human ideas is a miles more effective mailable component than human beings understand. it really is accessible to cajole your self that those undesirable issues not in any respect befell (it really is how diverse those who dedicated crimes of interest finally end up is such sturdy denial - they manage to cajole themselves that it not in any respect befell) or reframe the problem into one it really is more effective comprehensible (besides, we typically quite are too puzzling on ourselves- that speeding fee ticket to procure years in the past quite wasn't that wide of a deal). i became less than the effect that it became unlawful for most employers to apply a polygraph attempt (first hyperlink). yet ask your self - do you quite want to artwork with those who're sociopaths, or prepared to cheat the equipment/attempt, and managed by technique of human beings dumb adequate to actual position self assurance in such an unreliable metric?
