On the discovery channel et al, you often see videos of people swimming with whale sharks, the largest fish. Whale sharks are filter-feeders that feed only on plankton. But with their huge mouths, surely they occasionally swallow larger things.

What happens when they do?

The worlds deadliest snakes have developed such potent venom seemedly far beyond what they need to defend against natural predation and to kill thier food. For example Australia's Inland Taipan would defend itself against the likes of dingo's and goanna's and that would prey upon small mammals and reptiles surely wouldn't need venom strong enough to kill 100 people. Why is this?

I'm writing a story about animals, and I need four major animals to represent the four elements of fire, water, earth and air. I have already found two - Swallow for air, Fox for fire. On the others, however, I'm stuck. Any suggestions?

Water -
This was hard due to the fact that there are so many to choose from. However, I need it to thrive & be able to (more easily) defeat other animals in a fight or escape [more] easily in water while also being able to travel at a moderate pace without water.

Earth -
This can pretty much be anything. It's prefered if it's nothing too small - no ants, for example. Speed would be nice but is not necessary.

You can also, if you wish, comment on my choices for fire and air. ^.^

I found a nest in my garage while cleaning it out. The nest is about the size of a hand and is made of twigs and some peices of plastic. It had tiny, white, (cracked) eggs in it that were the size of a pinky finger nail. I was wondering what could have made the nest.

I recently saw a program on the Discovery Channel about elephants that included a segment where the group they were following came across the body of another dead elephant. The reaction of the elephants was strange, with them stopping to touch the bones of the dead animal with their trunks while they all gathered around. The program suggested that this shows that elephants can grieve for their dead and are thus fully concious beings. Does anyone know of any scientific research about this? Also, what is your opinion?

if the oldest female is always the Matriarch of the herd, what happens if she's not exactly the brightest member of the herd? i mean, if she somehow managed to survive to adult hood and assume that position, what does the herd do if she can't find good places to eat, drink, etc? has there ever been a documented case where this happened?
