I'm writing a story about animals, and I need four major animals to represent the four elements of fire, water, earth and air. I have already found two - Swallow for air, Fox for fire. On the others, however, I'm stuck. Any suggestions?

Water -
This was hard due to the fact that there are so many to choose from. However, I need it to thrive & be able to (more easily) defeat other animals in a fight or escape [more] easily in water while also being able to travel at a moderate pace without water.

Earth -
This can pretty much be anything. It's prefered if it's nothing too small - no ants, for example. Speed would be nice but is not necessary.

You can also, if you wish, comment on my choices for fire and air. ^.^

Thanks for the answers and comments! I'll probably write an edit everyday to say what I think about your responses =)

Again, it would -really- be better if the water animal could travel without water, for example a fish can't walk on land or fly. Also, I only want -real- animals - no dragons, unicorns, etc.

Falcons were suggested. "Swallows are excellent fliers, and are capable of executing impressive aerial maneuvers when hunting or courting." [http://www.answers.com/topic/swallows-hirundinidae-biological-family?cat=technology]

I also have personal reasons for choosing the animals I chose, for example swallows are thought to be bringers of good luck, so don't be disappointed if I don't choose your animal for apparently no reason.

My final choices will be posted near the end.

For water I would either go with a species of shark, perhaps white or mako... or a toothed whale, dolphin or orca.

With earth a honey badger shot into my mind.

As far as your other two what came to mind first was something different than yours.

Fire, I would pick a tiger. The poem by Blake comes to mind.... tiger tiger burning bright.
Air, something that really masters the skys more so than a swallow, for example a falcon.

AIR: Eagle is good. If you don't like it anymore, you could have some grand bird like a hawk or something like that. Fire: In China, fire represents a snake. Tiger is the main one, though. Earth: Buffalo doesn't do it for me, i would think horse, elephant, bear, bull, something to do with the earth, ground. Water: I would say dolphin. You could have shark, whale, fish or any underwater creature.

What about a dolphin or whale for water, and a mole, groundhog or prairie dog for earth.

water:

(fresh or salt?)

salt: killer whale or dolphin
fresh: dolphin (amazon pink river...ugly as hell but still has dolphin quality)

earth: snake or wolverine or fisher (much like the wolvering only bigger & meaner...)

earth would be badger or rabbit... water I'd do an otter or seal, it would fit nice with the others you have.
