I was looking in several astronomy books in my bookcases, and I see different figures given for the amount of time it takes our Sun and its family of planets, asteroids, etc. to travel once around our galaxy. some of my books are old, while others are new. Does anyone know the latest estimate?

I saw a figure given in a magazine recently, but it looked a bit off and was only to the first 5 figures. I calculated it more precisely by hand, since my calculators won't deal with so many digits. I just wanted to check my calculations with anyone else who has done it. To get a precise answer, one must know the precise speed of light in miles per second and the precise number of seconds in a year. The figure in the magazine is a bit high because it evidently used 365.25 days for a solar year. That is only an approximation, as a bit of research on century adjusments of the Gregorian calendar will show.

We currently know that the sun is expanding and eventually will become a Red Giant in about 5 billion years. My question is what is the annual rate of expansion of the sun? As the sun expends it's core mass and expands does it get that much closer to earth? I know the earth moves away from the sun approx. 1.5cm/yr. (Please correct me if I am mistaken). Would this rate of expansion cause more heat to come to the earth? I know there are several questions here but please start with the known expansion rate.

I would like to say before I ask that I do not beleive the moon landing conspiracy theories. I would also like to say that I am not trying to be biased in any way. My question is this: if the videos from the moon were in fact only played in half-speed on earth in a factory in Nevada, rather than one-sixth gravity i.e. the moon's gravity, how do NASA, and those against the theories explain this? Once again, just wondering since this idea intrigues me. Thanks for all answers, and try to make them mature.

I remember in the 90's plenty of space and science fiction movies and tv series coming out all of the time. People seemed very interested in space and the unknown. Now a days it seems people are becoming far less interested in space and science fiction and more into reality shows!!!!

First things first. Big bang. If the big bang caused nothingness to form...then what was there before this supposed explosion? To me big bang is very skeptical. You can't say nothing was there. because then nothingness was created from nothing. That makes since. But where did the first matter ever occur? This spontaneous explosion that just happened with nothing? To me the origins of the universe can never be truly determined. We can only speculate.

Now the earth. Same thing. despite the fact the earth was formed much much later, how can we know how it was formed? How did all of these coincidences align up and where did the first trace of any life ever come from? To me something can't form from nothing. So I wonder if maybe there really is a higher power that created it all? Just a thought.

And how can we ever be sure where it all came from? This happened billions of trillions of years ago. Longer ago then that.

There are some mysterious incidents occuring & the news channels are bringing up many such interesting informations & some hidden facts & unexplainable incidents. Many well reputed Scientists & astronauts agree that there are aliens. ( And they have reasons to agree, they say there are proofs )

I believe that we humans have not been able to explore the entire Universe so how can we be so sure of the non - existence of aliens. There are millions of galaxies & solar systems. When there is life on earth & we & several species of living creatures exist then it is possible that life might be on some other planet not necessarily in our solar system & it is also possible the environmental conditions are suitable for their existence but might not be suitable for ours !! Who knows ??.

Thanks for your kind response :)
