Your an astronaut aboard the Space Station; the only person aboard. Every other human being is on Earth. Attempts to destroy a comet have failed. You watch as the enormous comet hits earth, creating a fiery circle, which travels the whole way around the Earth. The Earth is overcast in black cloud.

What do you do next?

People believe in a god to explain how the universe is perfectly arranged to allow life as it is. Since we would not be here if the universe formed in any other way could it be that the universe has been created an infinite number of times. This time is the one that happened to be perfect?

why don't they fly the complete ISS to Mars and put it into orbit, with lander attached, the crew would not be bored on the long journey there and back and could continue with their experiments ! they spend 6 months now, with no problems

i seen a video on youtube about a planet called nibiru. and it said that its orbit was way off and every 3,600 years it comes by earth. it said that this would stop the earths rotation and cause natural disasters all over the world, plus kill all vegetation. so i researched and nasa had recently just discovered a new planet. but they didnt mention anything drastic about its orbit. so i was wandering if this was true or not?

Why are there so many christians in the science section? It seems to me that few if any of them have anything productive to say! Just wanted to know your thoughts.

I am all for supporting our troops and wanting to finish the job, but why can't America just set up bases here and build strongholds here and make it clear to the world that we aren't going to take the battle to your country if you've got a problem with us then bring your *** over here and do something were waiting.

Space is fraught with danger, not the least of which is the constant bombardment of Earth by meteorites, micro-meteorites and dust particles. Apparently a tiny piece of rock, travelling at such huge speeds, could disable equipment we place in space (as has happened a few times).

Why is the Hubble never hit? Or is it? Has it shields? Is it in a 'safe' orbit zone? If it's huge lens is hit then surely it could be destroyed? Is this lens protected from such debris and accelerating particles and if so how is it protected?

Regards,
Conor

I really want to see the Perseids this year, but I can't figure out when to look. In this article http://www.nightskyinfo.com/sky_highlights/ it says that the Perseids will peak before dawn on the mornings of August 12 and 13. Can anyone tell me a more precise timing? I live in Europe. Thanks!

Under gravity wouldn't anything surrounding or on a planet remain there until a larger object stripped the atmosphere etc. away. I'm thinking specifically of mars! If it had a water bearing atmosphere, it must still have it.

P.s. I know about solar wind etc. but it seems a bit far fetched and where did the solar wind take it if you believe that theory?

Perhaps they partially exist on a nearby plane of deep gravity that does not directly interact with our universe. That would mean that gravity has much longer range than previously assumed. Maybe the force they emit as "dark energy" is not congruous with normal matter.

Such a revelation whould show that we really don't understand gravity...

I heard that perhaps "dark matter does not interact" with normal matter. But couldn't it still come from stars and galaxies? Perhaps it is emanating into another dimension from the stars...

The main idea here is that the star is like the tip of the iceberg with dark matter/energy below in the depths (the rest of the iceberg) beyond the reach of normal space...

If a supernova were to take place in our galaxy, what is the maximum distance in light-years it could be from our solar system and still have the radiation from it turn our planet to plasma or slag (or both). Would we have any warning or was to detect it before the radiation front hit us. If you predict we could know it was coming before it destroyed us, how long would we have to wait? Notice I am looking for a maximum. Obviously a nova in closer proximity would do the same damage but the time from event to destruction would be a bit shorter.

I've had my current telescope since I was 8...It's nine years old, and I do believe I'm ready to graduate from such a childish scope to a serious, hardcore scope. So, I've started looking around, and I basically have fallen in love with the Orion line of telescopes. I'm having trouble deciding between the Orion AstroView 6 EQ Reflector or the Orion StarMax 127mm EQ Maksutov-Cassegrain. I did, at one time, have my heart set on an Orion SkyQuest XT 8,10,12 Classic Dobsonian. I couldn't make up my mind which Dob to focus on. I live in a converted car hauler. One half is a class room for my sisters and the other half is my room. My family travels. Alot. I don't need severe portability, but I do need to be able to *carry* it up and down/in and out of my trailer. That's what made the dobs unappealing. I've heard the slightest bump, and you have to realign it. I'm on a tight budget. Nothing over $800 is possible! Please help me pick one! Forgive any spelling errors. Suggest an eyepiece too!
